Guild Wars 2

This game has been so much hype, so little quality so far...

I'm really not enjoying the constant loading screens and Overflow issues that come with it. Having every zone separated by loading screens in the first place is a bit of an ambience killer in 'Massive' MORPG's, but when that always automatically = put on Overflow, then you're in for a serious headache. You can never even stay put in a party or playing with friends, because as soon as any of you want to leave that one little questing sandbox to move to the next... Overflow. So far the whole thing is such a headache, I can't believe they ever thought it was a good idea.

It all stems from the wider problem of Arenanet totally being unwilling to shape or control server populations. The playerbase of EU GW2 are already gathering on roughly 3-4 servers that are quite clearly going to be the premiere-league for the entire region, leaving the rest to niche communities and no-hopers. If they did away with Overflow and enforced some good old-fashioned population control (nothing wrong with that...), then the gameplay experience would be much better for everyone. Instead we're going to have massively imbalanced server populations and a gameplay experience that results which is either 'ghost-town' servers or 'can never play in a group' servers.

Ridiculous.

InKursion, you seem pretty negative about the game, you have been complaiing over minor things since beta when you wrote off the whole game because you couldn't re-bind keys (which you can do now, as was pointed out).

If I was a company who's purpose was to make money, I wouldn't invest loads in extra servers to cope with the first few days of release, I'd be bothered about making sure everyone can play and trying to make it smooth in the long term. That's what Anet seem to be doing, the servers are far more settled now than they were on Saturday, there's only been once or twice in the last couple of days I've struggled to get into the same server as someone and even then it was only about 15 minutes before we both joined the main server.

It's an MMO, it needs some breaking in, just try playing it and seeing if you enjoy the general concept. If you do, I'm sure the minor niggles you have will work themselves out. :)

I don't think I'm overly negative of the game. On the contrary, GW2 is a specious example of a game that seems to be immune to criticism from the gaming community. Everyone has such high hopes and so much resting on it being good that they're not so willing to question what isn't being done right. Yes, they introduced keybindings... well, OK. Well done for keeping up with functionality from first-gen MMO's. I am not grateful for that, as it was a criminal omission in the first place. I just don't dig loading screens and Overflow all the time, breaking up my gameplay experience. I'm not even on a particularly high-pop server, and so far there has been very little 'social excitement' over this game. Why? Because we're all forced to play single-player all the time (not to mention, funnily enough, nobody communicates in these new 'dynamic' group events).

I agree with your sentiments, criticism is as important - if not more so - than all of the brainless praise people keep lavishing on the game.

It's a great game, with a lot of potential, but it's a million miles away from being flawless, or even remotely complete.

That's not exactly a positive opinion from any angle though.

I agree about the key bindings, they should've been in asap but it was obvious they'd be in anyway so it never really bothered me (plus I use a G13 so it literally didn't affect me).

I don't find the loading screens too much, once every couple of hours most of the time isn't that intrusive. I'm enjoying playing with my friends (where possible, I've started to out-level them now because I've had more time to play). If you've tried to group up with someone in the last couple of days, its not too hard now, it'll only get easier too. The dynamic group events don't usually need communication, on the harder ones there are people talking in /m though. :)

Biggest problem is that nobody communicates because they've removed the holy trinity. They themselves killed the teamwork feel of these dynamic events themselvers.

Not that anyone would communicate even if they needed to, it would only be done by pre-organized groups.

Seems to be some issues creating characters on some server according to the GW2 Twitter feed. Seems the server my friends are on is one of them atm :(

I'm fully willing to admit that it may have something to do with me just getting older, and simply less willing to abandon all cynicism for a videogame... but this is literally - crushingly - the least absorbed I have ever been in an MMO. It really lacks the 'massive' feel, and the 'social excitement' I spoke about (lacking a better term). Even a few months ago in TERA, there was a real feeling of launch-week euphoria: everyone talking in local chat, working together, duelling, even having early server-based drama. I just don't get that in GW2. Half the time I'm on an Overflow with a mix of the whole EU, the other half people are mostly just questing in silence. It may have something to do with the Holy Trinity, yeah... and I am totally willing to concede that it may just also be me becoming an older, grumpier git. But I've been really disappointed, after really wanting to be swept away with excitement. That's 75% of the reason I always buy these new MMO's on launch, like a chump: the first week is unbeatable for good old fashioned gaming.

I do agree about the overflow stuff. I was never a fan of this in the first place and I think "proper" servers are needed, especially with wvw as people will just bounce off to the bigger/better servers.

I don't agree about the lack of the massive though, the DE's the amount of people going round and working together is a great feeling after othe MMO's.

The lack of social has been murdered by other mmo's which destroyed the feeling/need to communicate. Now the default position of new mmo players is to be an obnoxious, self obsessed little tard who only give a toss about their own gear and themselves.

I thinks there are definite faults in gw2 as inkursion points out and I hope they sort them. The death of holy trinity is good, but it's a tough one to implement without bringing about mindless Zerg mentality.

just bought this, finished creating character and at last step when naming i get an error unable to access login server - anyone else getting this?
