Guild Wars 2

Discoveries get you around 2-5 levels. ;)

so i was missing something after all. curses!
Got in eventually.

Controls are a bit strange tho.

For instance aswd are back foward etc... however double s and double d does the roll thing, but double a nd double d does nothing.

During combat are we ment to use the arrows keys? Becuase they seem to do the roll in all directions, which seems strange...

Oh and performance is heavy! With every thing on max, it drops to 40ish fps, I had to go with native aa to get back to 60fps.
I disabled double tapping in menu and use V instead, combat is much more comfortable that way.

oops we got 3 now :)

Got the big un this time :) .... This place will soon be overun with For The Beaver! cries :D

I'm enjoying it, with reservations.

I find that if you just follow your personal story, the game leaves you behind and you find yourself seriously under levelled for the areas the story takes you. That means you HAVE to do all the mapping (PoIs, Vistas etc.) and the "heart" quests just to keep up.

I started an Asura and 100%ed Rata Sum quite quickly. After a few chapters I decided to hop through LA and map all the starter towns - bad idea: I'm all burnt out now. If I see another jumping puzzle or obscure point of interest accessed by some easily overlooked sewer I'll go insane.

Maybe a bit of crafting to soothe my frazzled senses...

This is the the point, the personal story is something that happens along side the leveling process.

Thoughts thus far

I'm still a bit unsure about GW2 at the moment.

In brief -

Things I like:

  • Classes - plenty of original ideas here, quite diverse
  • Graphics - a very good looking engine that seems fairly well optimised
  • Environments - the zones look great

Things I don't like/currently not sure about:

  • Overflow System - seems a bad idea, but it's better than a queue, however it seems to have given ArenaNet licence to skimp on server capacity
  • PvE content outside of leveling - fairly sparse at the moment, and seems buggy
  • PvP - feels like a 'no skill required' mass zerg
  • Combat Engine - hasn't impressed me so far, seems dodgy at best
  • Questing/leveling - has little to no direction and gets boring very quickly - also isn't required for PvP

I'm currently on the fence, I have no doubt the game will improve but I'm not massively impressed so far. It's enjoyable, but I can't see it holding people's interest for a long time at the current rate...

So I have bought and installed the game, patched it, ready to go and I have started it up and at the character creation screen, the first screen for race selection is completely black/blank apart from the description box about the race and the bit of text at the top. Howcome I can't see any of the races? All of the other screens appear to be working ok, class selection and so on. What is the problem, and has anyone else had this issue?

From a distance it looks like Garfield :)

We were never going to have a Beaver, but I asked Dist to sort one out and he did that as a joke ...but I kinda liked it and now it stays.

The one thing I wanted with our emblem was it had to be simple and easily recognisable ...the Beaver sure covers all that and I love the little guy ...:o and never mind the play on words ....For the Beaver!;)

  • Overflow is a better idea than anyone else has come up with, there is no downside to being in it in my eyes, other than the party system being dog **** at the moment but that'll be fixed I hope.
  • PvE content always looked dire unfortunately for end game, but then again if its like GW1 end game I'll be really happy as it was vastly different to raiding and relying on other idiots to show up on time and actually not stand in stuff.
  • PvP, which one you playing? WvWvW or Structured? Proper structured is good, WvWvW is always going to be a zerg fest in any game, I mean WoW AV is really a zerg fest also, no ways of going round it, game will shine in structured. (WvWvW is still reasonably fun with friends though.)
  • Combat engine I'll hold off till max level PvP which is organised, game is too much of a cluster**** when leveling or WvWvW for me to tell, dueling would be a good way to tell but game seems like a beta at the moment unfortunately.
  • Questing far better than any other MMO and exploring is actually fun for once, can't complain.

One thing that is majorly ****ing me off though is if you look at the map, the Ring of Fire, Crystal Desert, and most of the south of the map and North look completely inaccessible (no levels displayed in them.), thus making the game look small than bloody original GW1, not impressed with that at all considering those zones are the best (other than shiverpeaks.)

In what way buchtis?

It's not a subscription based game, however I do think there's a lot of blinkered chat like I've seen in a lot of games. I've read a few times how "this is way better than WoW" etc.

I like it, best non-subs MMO I've played and to be fair so far it's far better than other recent MMOS I've tried such as Rift and SWTOR .

So far.. :)

I meant how long before they get bored and end up going back to WoW like everyone always ends up doing anyway. I've already seen a fair number of people saying that they seem 'uncertain' about the game and i'm wondering if the popularity will last.

I tried the game off my friends account for a couple of hours but wasn't impressed with the PvP at all (this is coming from WoW). Felt clunky and slightly unresponsive compared to WoW and everything seemed like a massive zerg instead of skill based combat.

i thought the same, then i thought maybe they will expand into it one day and use the asura gates they are building in lions arch to get there?

I'm sure they will expanded, but to be honest, the game isn't finished, far from it.

Thankfully I'm still having fun with their quest system/dying my armour/exploring. I think if it didn't have the massive customization/crafting/exploring or the changed combat I'd be laying into it for being terrible.
