I had got a Core 2 Quad Extreme 3ghz during the time they were £1k~ for about £300 :)
I am raising the money for a 4870X2 which is retailing about £300 - £380 lol

I use the excuse that the couriers are much more reliable to work as they always come early and it also means she won't have to wait in at home for it... She's started to get wise to it now tho and I swear she watches me get outta the car - if I'm carrying any large glossy boxes then my dinner seems to get lost at the back of the oven!:o

Cpu's, cards etc I can get away with and sneek into the house. The z-5500 had to be carried in through the lounge past her though...........:(

Payment can be hard, credit cards are no good for "under the radar" transactions. I work about 20 mins from OCUK so a quick trip up the M6 and cold hard cash is exchanged for hardware, a late night "stealth install" happens and magically performance improves. Sad but easier than hours of justification!
 
The GF and I have seperate bank accounts :D

Might go with the stealth install method, though often when i get in, she is in the kitchen cooking dinner so could sneak in and try it then :)

To Ucof - Enjoy that card. I had an X1950Pro before my 4870 1Gb and WOW this is just an altogether different level of gaming and stunning visual yumminess - what more justification could you need?:D
 
Well, the fact we have been without a boiler (no hot water on tap or radiator) for over a year means I require a little more justification! ;)

Its remarkably easy to get along without to be honest. I shower at work, the missus nips over to her sisters house, and we have a coal fire to keep us warm. Hot water bottles and snuggling also works well too!
 
1) Have a bank account she cant see see.
2) Order parts at work or when she isnt looking.
3) Get parts delivered to work or somewhere she wont be.
4) Recieve parts.
5) Put parts in bag to take into house.
6) Make an excuse to stay up while she goes off to bed.
7) Install
 
Wow.

Got it installed in about 5 mins after the GF started cooking dinner :)

Loaded up, she came back in and didnt question as to why my tv was showing "Found new hardware wizard" or why it was in "860 x 640" mode!

All my games (well, WoW and L4D are the only games I play) are now at full graphics and running very smoothly.

Got the Catalyst 9.3 drivers installed eventually, then cranked the fan speed on the card up to 100% to see how loud it was. I wish i had earplugs :( It is SO loud its ridiculous!

Now I just need/ want to look into the passive cooling options :D

Throughly loving it at the moment.
