It actually looks like he might have been hit in the right cheek, check his mouth after he gets up too.

Looks like the shooter did have a clear shot on Trump with no audience in line of fire behind him, i.e. from left, across the stage at right angles to the filming camera. As someone has said, it looks like the hydraulic lines in the fork lift to the right of Trump were hit, as you see fluid shooting out and the fork lowering.

In one of the news feeds you can see what looks to be spilled blood on the bandstand, fourth row from the top, so that would corroborate with it being an audience member.
