Misleading and false claims spread quickly online
Conspiracy theories, unverified claims and misleading social media posts have wracked up millions of views on X in the immediate aftermath.
One of the most quickly emerging, and so far unsupported, narratives to come out of the incident is that the incident was staged. On X, the word "staged" became the second-highest trending topic immediately after "Trump", with over 228,000 posts on the platform using the term.
This is according to our US partner network, NBC News.
In just an hour, numerous posts on X claiming the apparent shooting was staged were viewed several millions of times.
There is no evidence to support any claims that the shooting was staged.
Associated phrases like "BB gun" also made it into X's trending tab, with some people claiming without evidence that the weapon used in the incident was a BB gun or a weaker class of firearm.
Major accounts on X also quickly began circulating the photo of an Italian soccer commentator, claiming that he was the shooter and part of Antifa.
There is no reporting or statement from law enforcement supporting the claim.
Misinformation spreads so rapidly now. Heck we saw it in here with such a small selection of people.
Exactly. That report makes reference to ‘claims’ and there not being sufficient evidence for the ‘claims’. The event has happened very recently, we have a word for it, it’s called speculation. You seem very grumpy about it, people are going to speculate, I don't see many people in this thread making assured claims it was one thing or another.

It’s just the press giving false credence to what is said on twitter again and again.Grumpy would suggest an emotional response which is not something anyone on this forum is ever going to get from me.
I've personally always been a fan of facts myself. You're right, people will always speculate and it's rarely ever helpful.
Edit. Though I suppose by laughing at the BB claims I guess I was speculating that it wasn't a BB gun. Though it was pretty obvious which one was more likely to be correct.

Reporting speculation on twitter about an event that just happened as ‘misinformation’. Is as moronic as reporting what 2 people down the pub speculate about an event that just happened as ‘spreading misinformation’.
I’m not disputing its misinformation. What I’m disputing is that the media reporting on the speculation of the masses is completely retarded. But if the information is indeed wrong and people are then retweeting it then it is by definition misinformation. I saw loads of it like people showing a picture of the shooter when it was in fact the poor audience member who was shot. Being reposted as fact.

They don’t eavesdrop on every pub in the country and say “we heard 200,000 instances of someone calling the trump shooting staged after sipping their pint, in the immediate hours after the event”. Because everyone would call it stupid. Yet because people write it on twitter it is somehow deemed newsworthy?
The whole world would be a better place if the press stopped reporting what people write on twitter.
It's unlikely we will know for sure soon, but more likely he was behind the target (Trump). How was the one in crowd in the line of fire the shooter was on a roof? The crowd looks lower.
