Morning Everyone.

:(

I went to turn on my two week old macbook and it won’t boot.

I get the flashing folder and nothing else. It will boot from CD but when I run disk utilities the hard disk isn't mounted.

Also when I go to re-install OSX there is no disk to mount too.

I tried resetting the pvram as per http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58042 but made no difference.

I ran a hardware check (holding down d with disk in) but it said it was fine. :(

This is my first apple computer and I was in love up until now. Im suspecting it will have to go back.

Ill be ringing customer support first thing in the morning :(

sorry to hear it dude, been thinking about getting one of these myself, so please feel free to keep us all updated.

am sure if you make enough fuss when you ring apple they will sort something out pretty sharpish. don't be afraid to embelish how important the laptop is to you, i imagine they pretty much expect it. and if you're having no luck with the customer support person, make sure you ask for a supervisor/manager. they can often get stuff sorted for you sooner so i'm told.

good luck,

Rob

Well after going through everything with the support assistant again, even though i explained in detail everything i had already tested my 2 week and 5 Days old Macbook is being collected for repair.

It's a 14 day policy for replacements so im five days over that

Also as the disc wont mount all the setup / software i spent the last two weeks sorting will be lost :(

Im not filled with confidence right now but hopefully it will be fixed and i wont have any other problems.

Talking to the local Apple iSupport chap near us he says the MacBook's and MacBook Pro's have lots of problems.

Unlucky, hope you get it sorted asap.

Winds me up to **** when people say things like this. Its a first gen technology, and its quite high-profile. Apple are in the spotlight at the moment and any slip ups they make are being pounded on by everyone. Yeah there are problems with some of the Macbooks and Macbook Pros, but there are problems with pretty much anything that is ever released.

The processor whine on the MBP's annoyed me the most. I have an Dell Laptop with an Mobile Intel chip in it. That has the whine, just like the Core Duo chips int he Macbook have. Was there a major hoohar towards Dell? No. Apple suffers a similar problem, and instantly people say the computers are riddled with problems. Whatsmore, Apple are replacing the Logic Boards that cause the hiss which to be honest isnt that much of a pain (my MBP does it). Dell i dont think somehow would do the same.

I agree with what you're saying about people jumping all over Apple, but there's something that winds me up. First-generation technology would be a valid excuse for problems if companies gave things out for free, but not when they have decided to box it up and put it on sale. If it doesn't work flawlessly yet then don't release it.

Hmmm this makes me a bit paranoid as I am receiving a new macbook from apple next friday. I'll do the sensible thing and save all my documents on flash drive just incase there is a problem.

Hence why you should usually avoid 1st gen Apple products, has always happened. Believe me, we have plenty at work and the faults with them are quite numerous, backed up by the iSupport people we use.

My macbook was picked up this afternoon which is pretty speedy.

Hopefully it will come back in without any comsmetic faults and of course with the hard disk replaced or fixed.

Fingers crossed.

Hello guys.

Well since my last post when my macbook got picked up its repair status has been displaying as

On hold - Part on order (12-Sep-2006) :(

Most annoying to think the repairs centre dosent hold the required parts in stock. I am assuming its a new hard drive but surely they would have those avaliable to them ?

Possibly could be a new heatsink, I'm sure they'd be fixing computers with troublesome components so that reduces the chances of them coming back? Just an idea :)

Hope it doesn't take much longer!

Hello.

Got my macbook back today.

They have replaced the hard drive, Top Case and Bezel.

I didn’t think I had any other problems other than the hard drive so I can only assume the case and bezel where precautionary measures.

Haven’t set everything back up yet but it at least booted up when I tried it earlier.

Fingers crossed for the future. :D

Well the working macbook didnt last long.

Since it has been returned whenever i leave it switched off for more than an hour when i boot it up it just keeps switching itself back off until i hold the power button down so it beeps.

Ill be calling Apple again Monday, its starting to get me just a little bit

I feel sorry for you Mark JB, you expect with Apple products for them to be bliss but unfortuantely there are the odd few problems :(

Hope you manage to sort things out, keep us updated on your progress! :)

hope mine doesnt do this :( would hate for it to do something like that, especially as i have now got rid of the wife as i dont need her anymore, just me and my mac. :D

/only kidding.

Still in two minds really as it dosent do it everytime i boot, id say its 50 % of the time but when its brand new i guess you expect more really.

Ill see what technical support say tommrow, hoo hum!

Yes it switches itself off.

I was on the phone to technical support this morning at it switched itself off about four times in a row.

He immediately put me through and a collection was sorted.

It just makes me wonder if they even bothered to test it before sending it back to me as it occured on the very first boot.
