Its my first performance car i did confess ive been driving it hard.

Novelty has worn off now, but obviously the damage has already been done.

Stop beating yourself up, performance hatches are designed to be driven hard. Note that being driven hard is not the same as being abused.

If you aren't going to enjoy the car you might as well sell it or at the very least put it back to standard.

Also it does sound like it has gone in a big way, a clutch can normally slip for ages. Yours sounds like it has given up the ghost very quickly, maybe something else is a contributing factor? Or maybe it was just faulty? Odd example but I had done over 15k on a set of front brake pads when one day the friction material snapped clean off one of the pads. Was just a faulty part which took ages to show itself.

Really don't think a Subaru diesel deserves a mention in this thread..

Did you say to your partner as soon as it happened that it will cost £800? If so.. bad move! Either way, those running costs aren't exactly big, along with the performance car and 40k clutch, sounds fine to me! Cars cost a lot of money to run

The vectra has so far cost me in 18 months and 20k miles

2 x sets of front tyres at £120 a corner - £480
1 x set of back tyres - £240
1 x set of brake pads £100
1 x years Tax - £405
1 x Service at £160 from vxl dealer

Out of all that all I can see you saving is about £4-500 on tyres and tax.. the rest is standard costs really..

Id fit an OE or uprated clutch, and yes I would expect an uprated clutch to be expensive £250+

The labour seems quite a lot, assume its just main dealer £100 an hour job though?

Not meaning to sound too rude but...

She is willing to break up with you over a car? Doesn't really sound like a strong relationship...

Maybe instead of looking at diesel mondeos you should concentrate on saving your marriage?
The most sensible advice here.

It really is beyond unbelievable that this is just because of a box with an engine and a wheel and brakes at each corner, no matter how expensive to run.

Change the car by all means (I would recommend a Hyundai i20 personally) but don't imagine that that is going to resolve whatever underlying problems there are.

Car = money = biggest reason for marrital disagreements, especially at xmas time.

Its not about the car, its abotu the fact he's got a big bill 3 weeks before the most expensive time of the year

Thread has been a bit long so assumed you missed the post about me getting an independant to do it

Local vauxhall specialist autovaux can do the parts for £217 inc. vat. Then get local indy to fit at labour rates of more like £35 an hour than £100 an hour.

You would be nuts to put a OE clutch back in.

With your output power get something uprated and not have to drive around like you are standing on eggshells!

Didnt he say that he had spoken the tuners and that he was the only person to have had a clutch fail after the car has been remapped?

That's all well and good but makes no real distinction between driving styles and those that had clutch failures and never said anything perhaps??

Maybe MrLOL rides the clutch all the time? :D

Where's that picture from the North Yorkshire Moors meet when you need it?! ;)

BIG THUMB!

I dont think its fair for us to take the mick for him being 'under the thumb'.

For all we know he could be living his dream of a performance car to the detriment of the rest of his family and running it outside of his means. In this sort of scenario his wife would have a damn good point! Alternatively he could be able to easily afford to whack a clutch on, might be less than a weeks wages, in which case she needs to shut up.

Well he said before (when the bill was £800 still) that it 'would leave us short for christmas'.

Then perhaps he needs to realise he doesn't have the cash to run this sort of car?

What is more important - family or 'cool' car?

Cool car of course

;)

I think the vast majority of people with kids would feel a bit of a sting from a hefty bill at this time of year whether they were able to easily afford to run the car in general.

That said I agree with your point that if the car is becoming a drain on cash then it probably should go and that she has a point.
