Rubbish. If he wants to save money he needs to use his brain (sober brain). The only unreasonable costs he's incurred are through his own idiocy. £250 on a map that's cost him a further £800 in a new clutch.
Wont the ST220 feel totally weedy after yours, though?
shouldnt be toooo bad. st220 = 220bhp? not that much of a drop from 300
i dont think its that much of a bad idea

So your going to give cash to a member of the family because you can't be trusted?
How old are you again? Thread has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous.
Not sure about the details of your finances but if they are presently fragile then frankly I'd ditch the idea of a performance car full stop and take a 2 year break with something reliable, cheap and functional.
No shame in that.
I'd rather be responsible enough to not touch 5k rather than having to go and ask them for my own money when something is needed, what if you have a breakdown and they are on holiday/not available etc?
What are you going to do then? I think you should use this as an exercise in self control and prove to her you can be trusted and not dip into this fund of money.
i have savings accounts, i just dont have access to them. i haev standing orders going there, but i dont have cheque books for them and to move money across i have to go to a branch, and no one can be arsed to do that!
Yeah ok agreed.
Now, used ST220 yay or nay ? Yes its going to feel slow but its going to be more interesting and ejoyable to drive than a 1.8/2.0 mondeo surely ?
our savings account has instant access on-line. Thats half the reason its so easy to dip into.

Maybe aconsider my earlier suggestion about chopping it in for an 05 plate of the same car? You'd get the same car with cheaper tax wouldn't you?Ive discussed with the mrs, i can have a car that costs about the same to run, with the proviso that its cheaper so i can bank the change to pay for all the bills the car may throw up.
We've agreed that we'll just give the money to another member of the family, and then ask for it as and when we need it so it doesnt get spent. She has agreed to the ST220 which will coast broadly the same, but will save £200 on tax, and about £30 per tyre. But that combined with 5k in the bank to pay for running costs (with some burgled for a new couch) means shes a happy bunny, and ive got something more interesting than a 2.0 Mondeo.
To be fair, you said "If you really want to save money you need to stop looking at performance cars." And what he really needs to do is stop throwing money at bragging rights on a vauxhall. And driving like he apparently does.I'm not talking about his current car i'm talking about him looking at changing his current car inorder to save costs, he looking at saving costs by changing to an older performance car, the purchase price might be lower but the running costs won't be, what does he do in 3 years time when his pot of money has run out, he's left with no money to run it and a car thats not worth anything.
