From what I remember it was supposedly a bog standard FBI officer playing around with the CAPCHA on silk road that somehow got through to the admin page for it. The truth is more like they found someone who was an admin on the site, because of a intercepted parcel(of drugs), who they turned. That, coupled with the NSA breaking the tor encryption to find where the actual servers were hosted. I've forgotten most of it but that's what I remember - the FBI story didn't make any sense.
