Hackintosh or iMac?

A friend has just got an iMac and it's impressively quiet. It's just as quiet as my PC, but my PC is more powerful to boot. It's perfectly feasible to make a PC that looks and sounds as good as an iMac, has infinitely better upgrade potential, and can run OSX just as well. It's win win really!

This thread illustrates the typical PC user attitude to owning a computer, unable to look beyond specs as the be all and end all.

Mac users know what they are getting when buying a Mac, it does what they want and does it well - that to me is what computing is about, not stressing over whether someone has a more powerful machine than me or that some part of it might be out of date.

Yes, but if it can be done better? true most of us don't want to be the ones that push the limits, but if no one does, where does progress come from?

OSX and XP are "wierd" OSs, for the first time I think, computing power>>the requirements of the OS, they are stable for yonks, and for a vast majority of people, they don't really want/need anymore.

That doesn't mean we want to sit still, after all, this is OCUK :)

edit: oh, and for the record, I'm trying to go about setting up an OSX partition on my lappy to try. If you are going to run OSX, I say get a mac.

Tell me how well some modern games play on a Mac and then we can talk seriously about specs and what hardware is more powerful. That'll be exactly why a lot of people will be commenting on the lack of power with the iMac - this is Overclockers forum where a lot of people will be after performance hardware that can tweaked, and this is obviously something that can't be done on a Mac.

Well considering the specs you can get in Macs, iMac to Mac Pro... most games are playable... a lot of these replies are typical PC users tbh :p.

If you're thinking about building a PC to run OS X, just stick to windows.

Some updates were a little tricky to do, going from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 took me a couple of hours to tweak and get working but I sure didn't have to do anything like reinstalling. 10.5.3 to 10.5.4 was just a Software Update as usual. On a gigabyte board with a C2D it gave an xbench test faster than a colleague's 2 x dual core xeon Mac Pro!

A Couple of hours to do an update that took 10 mins on my MBP? LOL

Sorry but if thats the amount of **** you have to deal with using a hacked OS sod that!

Get an iMac for the piece of mind!

I was looking at my next desktop purchase but after reading a few stories about how long it takes for normal updates I think i'll stick to the correct hardware!

The idea of buying the system/hardware combo is because it works seamlessly. Buying a hackintosh defeats the point of going OS X if your going to get XP issues!

Well you are kind of quoting pre-built machines there and ignoring the vast range of sizes and designs actually available. Macs have a very sleek design indeed, but you can build an equally sleek, more powerfull PC, and run OSX on it just as well as the Mac can. What's not to like about that?

Not really, im well aware that there are cheaper more powerful alternatives out there. I have done my research.

But it won't be as well as the mac can, update issues, incompatibilities, using a hacked unoffical version of the system, i'd rather spend the slightly more money and have something I know I can rely on.

(Oh and a Mac Pro is the dogs danglies in looks)

i use my ps3, xbox 360 or wii to play games,i use my lovely imac for everything else.

If looks really bother any of you, just buy an Apple Cinema display and hide the the tower out of sight. Then not only can you look 'sleak and cool' in front of all your buddies, but you can pay more for another overpriced underspecced nice looking Mac product :D

Real men use a Mac Pro :o

I agree ;)

must be nice to have an endless amount of money and no girlfriend to drain your wallet :)

My current spec Mac Pro cost me less two weeks ago than my PC did when I bought it eighteen months ago. Around 20% less in fact. Admittedly I bought the Mac Pro second hand but the PC wasn't quite top spec at the time and the Mac is in perfect as new condition.

Smug? Absolutely :D

Yes you can get some nice PC cases but on a design and usability front they don't touch Apple (just look at the inside of a Mac Pro)

Would rather have a Quad Core PC that looks better than a Mac which can run osx in a vm ;)

If you can't shutdown then you're doing something wrong. See my post above.

Or something that isn't possible to do. Stop being obtuse

I'm pretty sure real macs dont get kernel panics either. I'm not saying its impossible just not practical.

I'm not being obtuse. Don't forget here that I've come from the same situation, ie having spent time and effort making things work on non Apple hardware. There are many instances of hackintoshes not shutting down properly and a good few fixes about to get around the problem. It's generally a case of getting bios settings correct and adding the appropriate script to force the hack to a single core before running the shutdown. It's not rocket science.

Looks like it is :p

Just to say, i've done a lot of work on my hackintosh, and it is 100% stable. I haven't run into a single issue and since installation everything has run perfectly. There is no reason hackintosh's can't be stable, and if anything mine is proof they can.

It is possible to get a hackintosh working perfectly, however when I built my computer I built it using components I knew it would work with, so it does take some effort and I have had hackintosh's go crazy in the past. It takes effort, but it is possible, and i've saved myself a ridiculous amount of money in the process.

I've been running mine since about the release of Leopard.

best to go with real apple products over hackingtosh every time hackingtosh is ok if you just want to play about with osx or run some apps every now and then but always if you can go for the real thing

an imac will so much better in the long run

but might i recommended a macbook pro with external screen over imac as the specs are very close and having it potable is just much nicer
