Had a run in with local game shop today (360 vs PS3)

I can understand store looking forward to the PS3 it's going to make them plenty of cash I'm sure but the folks at my local gamestation seem to be more excited about the Wii which is great because so am I. :D

although most people at game dont have a clue, one guy in the durham store overheard me telling my mate about upgrading my pc, we got chatting and suggested i order from OCUK, i asked him if he was a member of the forums, he was, but i never found out his username....

The dreamcast didn't have multi platform compatability, it was built on a Windows CE OS but it didn't have any cross platform abilities like the 360 will have.

The guy was talking out of his backside pure and simple.

er... Surely there are less games out there for PS3 than there are for 360 so doesn't this make it kinda moot? How many games on the 360 are currently available on the PS3? I may be wrong but not many - are you sure you know 50 times more?

Aside from this, I hear that SONY will be supporting alternate Operating Systems like Linux being installed.

I discovered today that Sony are going to be release homebrew kits which can then be uploaded to the Playstation network. I know Microsoft have something similar with XNA but that requires C# coding skills. The Sony solution is going to be accessible by all (apparently) and operable from the console without a keyboard.

I am intrigued to say the least, especially as Sony are saying that they are users will be able call all API functions such as physics, texture mapping, etc.

Personally I think it is foolish to write off the PS3 and SONY. They have some pretty smart cookies working for them.

For the record, I'm not likely to buy either of the boxes so am fairly impartial in my observations, but the obvious 360 fanboyism in this thread is grating - hows about a little maturity kiddies?

Certainly an interesting observation but he does go on to say that it currently lacks the software and full functionality to make it an essential purchase. These are all things that can be improved upon by software and firmware updates...

As I said multiplatform games on both systems - Marvel Ultimate alliance, COD3, R6V, NFS Carbon, THPS8, ridge racer go and read the reviews at 1up IgN and Gamespot, or just look at screens/videos. The 1st gen 2nd gen argument doesn't hold water, dev kits were out at the same time at the same stage the clock speed for the rsx was reduced 50mhz in that time and the hardware is still a machine that was supposed to be released in march.

Your point? If you honestly believe that homebrew is going to take off in any meaningful way without SCE certifaction process then you are delusion, the ps2 was relatively simple and cheap to develop for and even with 100m ps2's NetYaroze flopped HARD.

Look if its really going to be a wysiwyg style game development system then you aren't going to be producing anything more complex than pong. You will need coding skill to produce anything worthwhile.

see above.

Nobody is writing them off, I have a £100 bet it will still sell the most , but it hasn't been built with the gamer and developers in mind, if you believe that it has then more fool you. The Ethos isn't right and hasn't been from the get go.

I'm an Xbox fan I'll openly say that, and it's primarily because of the changes the introduction of the xbox has made to the industry and the ethos microsoft has towards this industry and the gamers. But not a single generation has gone by where I haven't had all the consoles, not because I'm rich because believe me i'm not, but because I love games.

If suddenly Xbox720 or whatever starts going the way sony have (egotistical, brand reliant, inbalanced) then i will stop being a fan simple as.

As with anything like the recent 1080P update, dont start the software war, because sony will lose.

I never take any notice of shop staff ever, all the info I need is available on the net, and you can be sure they try to sway you from what you intend to buy. Tell him to go and work for sony as he knows so much about the ps3, he is wasted behind the counter.
