Hallo !!

I am thinking of upgrading my car and have found what I want.
After part exchanging my car, I will have to pay £1890.

Anyway, I want to try to beat him down a bit. So what does anyone think of as a good starting point ?
I don't want to take the **** and say somethig like £1500 for fear of angering him, but equally I still want to leave myself room to get a good deal.

Anyway, what do you think ?
:)

£1500 is fine, although maybe start at £1600 if you don't want to anger him :D

£1000 is taking the ****

Ye id say £1600 is probably best,if you came out with £1500- hes going to notice it straight away and put the money back up.

Are we talking trade px or a private deal? regardless, I know of very few people who put their car up for sale without factoring in a 10% or so max haggle factor. If it is a trader then he will be expecting a haggle and will think that most people that don't are mugs imo ;)

Nothing wrong with trying. Last time I haggled free MOT which I expected anyway, ended up needing new rear springs. Bonused about £150 - well garage prices anyway.

So, what do I need for a nice and legal transaction.
Here's what I can think of off the top of my head..
* VC5 form
* Log Book
* MOT Sheet
* Reciept ;)

Anything else ??

Tell us you are buying, its age and mileage and what you are trading in, its age and mileage and we can tell you if he is seeing you off or not or if you should be paying less.

If it was a dealer i wouldn't care about "angering him". I would have offered £1500 as the first number.

Remember you can't haggle lower than the first number you say, but you can always increase the amount you offer.

Mine has a light 36,000 :D

Still, the longer I own the new one, my lack of miles should make the mileage more and more decent every year :)

At the moment he has about £500 profit in the deal, assuming there are no nasty suprises with either car. £1500 would seem a bit low but I'd certainly offer him that and be happy with a cost to change of anything under £1700.

Well I don't know about his having nasty suprises (I hope not, touch wood), but mine has 2 panels with enough nicks and scratches in to warrant a re-spray (But he knows this)
So that puts his profit at about £300, and I guess he's allowed to make a bit of profit right ? ;)

Not a bad deal at all mate.

I take it the Sport has had its 5 year /72,000 cambelt change? (this would cost you £600-850 at Renualt or ~£450 at a specialist such as Birchdown.)

heres a good haggling technique

when he gives you the final figure, pause for thought for a moment and explain its a bit more than you wanted to spend. Ask him if he can do anything about the price. He will then usually have some kind of leeway already given to him that he can give. Then say "its still more than i wanted to spend, can you make it start with a 15 ?". He possibly wont, then come back up a little. If its a dealer, find a figure he settles on, then make one last push for free petrol / tax / mats / flaps etc.. to really push him

Trick with bargainning is to be cheeky, but be a cheeky chappy with it. Remember, haggling isnt bad, as long as you both have a laugh and joke about it nobody will mind. Haggling when both parties are light hearted about it is fun.
