Half Life 2 VR - upcoming mod

Valve had absolutely nothing to do with this

Well, apart from the letting the mod be officially on Steam which is a huge plus, as it makes installation easy, allows the developer to update easily and gives far more visibility.

So that's a huge way that Valve have contributed to the mod.

Big WOW... They eventually caved in and let them release on steam, otherwise had NOTHING to do with it

It's hugely significant. It'll increase the number of users installing the mod massively.

Also you underestimate how great it is that Valve allows and supports modding.

Many publishers and developers don't and mods often get shut down with legal threats.

So Valve had everything you do with this mod being at all possible (apart from creating HL2 of course), and deserve credit for allowing the mod developers to distribute on Steam, which gives free distribution, dev tools, and a dedicated Store page.

personally i would rather congratulate valve for making games rather than for allowing someone else to put a mod for a game on their store. Yes valve deserve a thanks for allowing it....... but lets be honest, valve didnt need to put much effort into it. Valve promised 3 VR games made by them when they were pushing their index headset. years on down the line we have HLA which is impressive, but still 2 titles down.

I totally agree that Valve dropped the ball big-time in failing to support VR with their own titles, unlike Oculus/Meta who did initially at least produce some amazing PC content, though now they've effectively abandoned PC VR.

Truly in the last year it's been modders who have been producing the best PC VR content. Unfortunately PC VR just doesn't have the number of users to support expensive AAA PC VR titles.

That may change with PSVR allowing another source of revenue for AAA VR developers.

I found a HL2 mod on Steam that has its own store page, it updates a few things :

Edit: this doesn't work with the vr mod as they are separate game installations.

Might even get me back into gaming, just need a GFX card and a VR headset now.

Says a lot about the gaming industry that this is the only title I'm even half bothered about.

I was like you in 2016, then I got into VR. It brought me back to the good old days of gaming when everything was new and fresh. Long story short, now I am back enjoying gaming again, both VR and pancake games.

This is pretty good, though the movement is very slidey and can feel like you're moving on ice, and the jumping puzzles can be very annoying due to this.

Probably the most immersive thing is crowbar-ing the manhacks. That's fun and terrifying at the same time.

How big was the download? Will have to get on this tomorrow.
it's a whole new hl2 game install (called Half-Life 2 VR), it's about 4GB, it doesn't touch your original HL2 install (if you have it installed, you don't need it installed u just need to own it).

Does this work with hl2 Update? As in the slightly better visuals version.

Nope, the hl2 update and hl2 vr are in different directories. You can however update the textures of hl2 vr.

I've never played HL2, but have done many many runs through HLA and it's pretty good so far.
As has been said, it's very slidey, which is ultra annoying at times, and yes the textures really need an update.
I wish they'd copied the ladder climbing and gun reloading from HLA, as it's poor IMO, but, as it's free and not finished yet, it's no biggie.
I'd be very interested if there are any mods out there for it.

It needs a texture update as they don't hold up to close inspection in VR.
I'll have to see what mods are compatible.
yes I thought that might be the case, I'm looking into that now. The devs said a non-Dll based mod should be supportable in this VR version.

the HL2 HD Enhancement Project maybe? they even state they are using some HLA textures

Found these haven't tried them yet. I actually think the graphics aren't too bad and are great for a 2004 game. I have MSAA x 8 and oculus debug tool pixel override on 1.5, quest 2 resolution in oculus home pc app on max.
