Half-Life: Alyx

ah, welcome to the world of VR :)

The worse thing you can do is to upgrade just one part of your system, because that just highlights the need to upgrade the rest :p

Yeah, the joys of being in the "PC master race"! However, after experiencing PS VR, this seems so much better, I don't mind at all.

But in all honesty, if I can push games at 90hz with no frame drops and no stuttering, I would be more than happy. As I said, the base of the machine is a bit old and was just sat in a box, hence why I used it. The Index kit was £900 and change, along with a new PSU, GFX card, and SSD to go along with it, I was glad to save a few pennies!

I will probably pick up a B550 mATX AMD mobo, a 5000 series processor, some better memory, and a new chassis and swap a few things around with my other machine. Should hopefully result in a decent VR machine, which looks + performs better than my current machine!

So, I am just going on chapter 6 and I must ask... does it get a little more interesting? The game is cool, but after you've been in the 100th derelict apartment/office building that all look the same, it starts to get old.

The gunfights ramp up at the end of chapter 6. Chapter 7 shifts genre somewhat with Jeff. Jeff is fun. You will remember Jeff. Can’t answer for 8 onwards since I haven’t played them yet.

The final chapters get pretty intense in places in my opinion, including some quite mind bending stuff where up is down and down is up and everything in between!

There's a definite ramp up in terms of intensity, I think that's probably intentional hand-holding to build up some newcomers to VR. Might be a bit overwhelming for some if it just dropped you right in the thick of it.

That said, it's not the fastest paced game overall. I'd say it plays more on the wonder of being there and how you interact with the world than endless action sequences but it definitely has it's moments, they just mostly come later on.

I've been playing it for the first time on my Quest 2 and it's nothing short of stunning. I've got an RTX 2070 and can thankfully run graphics on ultra, though I do get the occasional stutter here and there. Taking everything down to a high setting doesn't seem to make a difference, so it might be Virtual Desktop perhaps, though I'm 1 metre from the router on 1200mpbs. I can't imagine what games and VR will be like in a few years' time if this is the benchmark now. Makes me want to set out a stall in front of my house and demonstrate it to anyone passing. It has to be seen to be believed, but I can't even show friends and family though due to covid :(

How are you finding the FOV with this game? ill be playing on Quest 2 also, but having a larger IPD has reduced my FOV a small amount.

My FOV is fine, really. The same as any other Quest 2 game. This is my first VR headset, so I can't really compare. My IPD is 63mm, so I have it on 2. I find if I pull the straps a bit tighter I get a slight increase in FOV (at the risk of getting a headache :D). I've got a G2 on order though, so will be interested to see the difference. I can imagine HL:A looking even more incredible in that.

I'm on a second playthrough trying to get that darn gnome to the end of the game.

The physics keep pinging it off into the ether so having to reload to get it back.

Still an amazing game though. The sense of immersion is palpable.

Hello guys , i dont have Link cable for my Quest 2 so i wonder if i can get superior picture quality via Link compared to Virtual Desktop and wifi6 router ? Has anyone compared HL Alyx PQ in both ways ?

Thanks !

LOL do you get an achievement or something?

You don't sound too happy about it :p More frustration than it was worth?

Yeah you get an achievement if you can carry it all the way through to just before the end of the game. You can't store it in your inventory so you have to carry it in one hand, and put it down in a safe place when exploring or going into combat. The main problem was it pinging off into the void due to shonky physics. Sometimes when you reloaded an autosave it had vanished! So it was a pain, but an interesting challenge. Only 1.5% have this achievement apparently.

I can see why only 1.5% have it. That does sound annoying!! Fair play for getting it done, not sure I would have the patience.

Is this worth playing on a 6700k/gtx 1060 3gb or wait for an upgrade and enjoy it in its full glory?

On what headset? On older headsets like the Vive or Rift CV1 then the low resolution would work in your favour. On more modern headsets it'd probably look quite blurry on that setup, as Alyx changes the render resolution depending on your hardware.
