My lad has had a few hard shutdowns only with Alyx.
He did research himself which led to PSU failure or something about this game triggering spikes on systems like mine..
5800x3d with 3080 plus some watercooling D5 and AIO.
Had an 850w in there and a spare 1300w
Used it to show him the innards of the PC and switched the PSU over. 30mins in and no problems.
PSU is only 5 years old or there abouts. Seasonic Prime.
The 1300 is even older Leadex Superflower.

I had to RMA my seasonic prime as it had a flaw which caused it to shut down under high load, which i started to get after I added new ryzen cpu and a 3080.
Contact seasonic about it maybe and see if they could RMA it?
Thanks will get box from loft. Should have the receipt in there. Not actually sure where I bought it and it isn’t in my online orders…
That said we’ve not had issues with rdr2 or other demanding games.

I could reproduce mine with certain stress tests that would just trigger a shutdown lol. It was under high load so CPU and GPU both using a lot of power.
You can alleviate the load to some degree by limiting the power to the GPU or CPU, GPU I did using afterburner and set the power limit to 90% (for 3080 didn't impact anything really and made it run a bit cooler).

It does say you need a proof of purchase, I suppose that might be more difficult to do.

The new one came with a slightly modified spec I think to prevent the issue, I had mine from 2019 originally and RMA it in 2022.
The 3090 could generate some pretty huge transient power spikes which would trigger the voltage protection on some PSUs. I had a couple of hard shutdowns on my 3090 with a Seasonic Prime but I undervolted the card and it all worked fine after that, with almost no loss of FPS.

lol its not the fear which puts me off.... its finding the time. i genuinely do not know what i did with all my free time before having a kid! (I gamed a lot more for one!!!OMG.. play it now.. it's not that scary.. it's a video game..
)I will get to it, tho i have probably over 100 VR games untouched!. some get so old that they have been turned off without me ever playing them
on top of that Elite Dangerous has a lot to answer for........ i have played that for 1000s of hrs in the last decade (all in VR) - imagine what i could have achieved if i had done something productive with that time!!!

Yeah been there.. got both t-shirts.. although it's getting easier now mine are 14 and 16.. getting them to actually communicate anymore... now that's an issue

For me, no. Alien Isolation is still the scariest, most tense experience that I have had in VR.
