Half-Life: Alyx

Wearing a mask protects from one headcrab face grab.
Wearing a respirator means you dont have to cover your mouth with your hand when you're near spores as well as a single headcrab grab protection.
Wearing a hat/cone on your head protects from one barnicle grab.
Bottle storage - Carrying a vodka bottle is related to an achievement, its easier to carry in your wrist pocket than in your hand though. Only vodka I think though.

I'm sure you can store stuff from about the start, maybe after the gravity gloves? You can definately wear some things on your head from the start.

nice one, thanks

really wanted to take vodka back with me, but I've got a med kit in each wrist instead :(

Game is really immersive, feels like your actually there !
HL: Alyx is the only VR game that's made me fall over through complete immersion, as opposed to glitches and freezing taking me off-balance.

I was playing with the pool tables in the hotel, rolling pool balls into the pockets and trying to cannon into other balls to pot them. All the balls ended up on the other side of the table, so "naturally" I put one hand on the table so I could lean over and pull some of them back...

Luckily the damage was limited to some scuffs on the headset and controller, and a few minor bruises - and nobody was there to see it

Haha :D Just like Ronnie O'Sullivan

I grabbed this seeing as it's discounted. It's been on the "must play" list for ages now but for some reason I never got around to it, mainly because I needed to set up my VR area properly. Wow, what a game! I've seen videos and reviews of it, but the graphics look sooooo much better when you're experiencing it for yourself. I love the immersion too, it's one of those games that shows how good VR is when it's done correctly. I haven't come to any scary parts yet but I think I'm close :D

Well, the wife and daughter are away for a week so I bought this and cleared out our fairly large living room to play it with, I was expecting something good from HL:Alyx so thought i'd make an effort.

I underestimated it, this may well be the best game i've played in years, why do we not have more stuff like this on VR??

The graphics for it's age are amazing, it's got a proper story & it makes me want to have "Just 10 more minutes", I finished last night at 2:10am.

It's 23:40 and i'm struggling to resist another hour or two, i've not had that from a game in 5+ years.

Just completed in 3 days (had to rush as I only have Meta Quest 2 until tomorrow), omg that was some sick experience, never tried VR before and my mind was blown by how good VR is. Also I had no idea how cheap VR is nowadays compared to few years ago.

100% this, this was absolutely one of the bast gaming experiences in years for me. It's just got stand out moments all the way through, even the stupid stuff like running out of ammo running away scared from a head crab in fear, then in a random moment of "I wonder what happens", you pick up a trash can and boom throw it down on top of that head crab and proceed to absolutely wet yourself as the trash can with the head crab in it scuttles about the floor clueless. Just such a brilliant and well thought out experience. So easy to underestimate it until you actually give it a go.

Though I've not played it, it's well regarded as one of, if not the, best single player vr game out there.

Price of entry for vr definitely dropped with the quest 2, it's what made me go for it.

Good shout, on my list for the weekend.
Take your time with it, don't rush it, brilliant game.

I think this also highlights what's wrong with a lot of modern games too, it's a full on experience, no boring travelling to & from location, it just grabs & holds your attention for the duration.

Never has searching through filing cabinets looking for additional resin been so much fun!

I discovered today that you can effectively hold the pistol in a 2 handed manner, makes aiming so much more accurate.

Not sure how much VR you have played but there are some other games out there that you should try.

Skyrim VR fully modded: is a truely awesome experience.
If you like the Fallout series of games, Fallout 4 VR is really good.
Alien Isolation with the Mothermod: You want the bejaysus scared out of you? Extremely tense game.
Robo Recall: A really good VR game. So well done and so much fun.
Lone Echo 1 and 2: Makes you feel like you are there, for real.
Walking Dead Saints and Sinner: Great Zombie killing VR action with decent story.
Moss: A real gem of a game. So often overlooked.
Asgard's Wrath: Lots to do, Intense combat, Thowing Axes, bows and arrows. Feel like Thor!! What's not to love?

Then there are games like Beat Saber and Pistol whip. They will take over your life if you let them. Since you like shooting things, you should really try Pistol Whip. Makes you feel like John Wick, really.

Then there are some social games, which is really the strength of VR. The king of social games is Walkabout Mini Golf!! If there is one game you should have in your VR collection, this is it.

But if you really love Half Life Alyx, then fear not, there are ton of mods out there which add new weapons, levels etc.

I've been thinking about Skyrim. What mods are required for it ? Are they freely available ?

There's literally 1000s of mods to choose from. The most popular 1's afaik are graphics mods (it can look stunning), mods that add a body and allow you to interact with the environment like grabbing and picking up things and people, etc. There's just so many mods. It can become tedious to download and install so many of the well considered mods so there's a mod installer helper .exe called Wabbajack that's been made.

If you google Wabbajack Skyrim that'll get you started, you need to install the game and Wabbajack and go from there. Downloading manually withe the help of Wabbajack is free, however it's tedious if you have a long mod list. For a small fee paid to Nexusmods (the site where many mods reside), Wabbajack can pretty much automatically install many gigabytes of mods.

Tyke's answer above has all the info you need :)

This thread has more info.

I looked at skyrim VR a couple of years ago, but it appeared (at least to me) that the controls and the mryiad of stuff you had to be able to do with very limited buttons meant that you really needed to have played the non-VR game to have any idea what you were doing. It was basically meant to be played with the full flexibility of a keyboard It is a common issue with complex games that have VR added-on afterwards, there is no lead-in tutorial giving you time to figure out what the controls are and the various ways you need to interact, and also when the game is not designed fundamentally with VR in mind, the mapping of controls can be very unintuitive for a newbie.

You don't need that many controls with VR as things like attack & magic are done by actions more than buttons. The inventory etc is the same & just floats infront of you.

Also with the latest mods you have full body presence and have Alyx style pickup and store mechanics. You can physically grab things, and drop them over your shoulder to store in your inventory, or use gravity glove type behaviour to snatch from afar, you can drink potions by grabbing them and holding them to your mouth and eat food too. You have user definable holsters so you can grab a sword or bow from over your shoulder, swords on your hip or daggers on your arms.

You can also speak dialogue lines, and also activate spells and other features using voice - I have 'open map' and 'open inventory' setup for example. You can even speak dragon shouts if you want to.
