I'm new here so i apologise if this has already been up before or that its already around and i couldn't find it. Anyway....

I just had a PC built and ordered a 250GB hard drive but in 'My Computer' it says that it is only 127GB big. Does anyone know why this is happening or how i could fix it.

Thanks for your time.

You installed the latest service packs?

You need them cos original win xp does not support more then what you stated

It really must just Windows XP not detecting more than 127GB of hard disks. Get a disc with SP2 slipstreamed in or make more partitions later in Windows. It's a very well known issue so there's a lot of information about it.

Your disk is definitely fine :)

I've installed the motherboard drivers, i know this is a stab in the dark but when i right click on it there is the option of format. I was going to do it but then realised i didn't know what it would do and that it might delete everything, so i left it. Could this help?

I'll try looking around for some windows fixer thing if its only reading to 127GB. The hard drive doesn't seem broken so thats good.

Where would i get a disc with this on it?

I,ve taken a picture of mine at the moment (mines in a mess before anyone ask's)^
Is yours similar to the bits I,ve highlighted?
On the right of your c: drive is the missing space showing up for you there as unallocated?

Not quite as easy as doing that nope :(
Got 2 options
Reinstall windows but this time use a slipstreamed one with service pack 2 already on it.

There's various programs which should be able to do resize the 127 gig partition to the right size, a fairly simple one and its free is http://partitionlogic.org.uk/download/index.html
Download that and burn it to a disc as an iso if you have the software or a floppy disk if you still have one on your pc.

So with that website do i have to reinstall windows? Can't I just put that free program thing on a disk, load it up and it will be fixed?

If i do have to reinstall windows will i lose everything on the hard drive that's on it now? I know I'll have to make a backup but will all the installed programs on here now need reinstalled as well or will they just run normally as soon as i copy the back over? (Sorry i'm so useless, i've never had to deal with computers this in depth before.)

Nah you won't have to reinstall windows if you use the program off that website.
By using that program hopefuly your be able to resize the partition c: from 127gig to the right amount of space without losing anything.
If you don't have any joy with that program theres others you can try like partition magic if you do a google search.

The 2nd thing you can do if you want is to leave it as it is and create a new partition on the unallocated part you saw in that disk managerment window you were in earlier, which means your end up with another hard drive letter in my computer for the remaining missing space.

The last thing to do is reinstall windows xp but this time make a slipsteamed one containing service pack 2 on it and yep you will lose everything from installed programs to any settings you,ve made at all.

By the sounds of it you,ve only just installed windows recently so I would bite the bullet and and do a reinstall if its getting a bit over your head :p
For slipstreaming service pack 2 without the need for other programs give or take check out http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sp2_slipstream.asp as it pretty much walks you though it all.

Use the free program ;)

You won't require a re-install but a backup is recommended if you have important files/programs/etc (IMO since its a new install I wouldn't bother). Instructions here :)

Alternatively (& how most of us here have it) is have several partitions. Basically you have Windows & programs on 1 partition then your files, music, etc on another. This is how I have it on mine after Windows messed up & I lost my unrecoverable personal files

The same program can do that for you (See here).

I'll probably do the partition thing, thanks for the help guys. For a first experience of getting help from forums my expectations were crushed and overshot! So so so so so so so soooooooo much better than the retards on helplines, i hate them all.

Final question, well, more of check that i've got it right.

Once i've done the partition thing that part of the memory will appear as a separate hard drive so to speak, like i've got an E Drive now but once i've made a partition i'll have an E and an F. (Oh yeah, should i make the partition exactly 104.89GB or go a bit under? I don't want to break the hard drive by doing something daft.)

DISK SPACE! Sorry, but the old man also confuses the two & it irritates me :(

New partition will appear as F: after the optical drive which is E:. If you go back to the management 'thingy' you can change them around. Remember to restart Windows after partitioning (should tell you anyway).

Size is totally up-to-you & never heard of anyone 'breaking' a drive from partitioning, maybe just accidentally loosing files if not careful. Thing to note is, resizing when files are on the partition can be very tricky & take a long time to perform or even refuse if inadequate space.

Can I also recommend this 'better' software ;)

Right, I'm downloading the trial for that partition program now and i shall post whether i got it working or not. Again thanks for all your help, i'd probably still be shouting at it and hitting the table without it.
