Half Tonne Man

my mum was bullied a lot at school but shes turned out fine, maybe we should all accept everyone and say that everything is ok. Its only thru feeling that we arnt perfect that we better ourselves. If you can overcome your shortcomings then you will ultimately be happier. Im not saying bullying is the best solution but its one way that people can kick habits or improve themselves.

Personally I think it is safe to say that no one here is qualified to judge that having a 'chemical imbalance' is not a disability. That's not to say it is but many people here have announced that being fat is ridiculous when they don't really understand what power hormones have over the body.

If you have never been overweight then, as far as I'm concerned, you can't really judge others who are. Though perhaps the extremes differ slightly, it is comparable to imagining being in a trench in WW2 and actually being there.

Perhaps to an extent, but there are better ways to support people.

Different people respond differently to ridicule, some become stubborn and vow to prove it wrong, some are too lazy to take notice or care and some cry and eat some lard. :)

i think tailgunner hit the nail on the head, its down to a mental state. Your depressed you eat, you get big, you eat more etc etc

The thing i cant understand is when you get to the point were you cant stop, if your that big you cant get out of bed. What makes your mind say keep eating? Dont stop!

Well, im rather stocky myself (i got nothing on this guy though) and as odd as it sounds, its easier to eat than it is to stop.

You get extreme cravings, much like smoking for smokers and alcohol for alcoholics. Believe it or not, food can be like a drug to a point, and you cant just "stop eating". When you get into a habit of eating a lot constantly, your stomach stretches and it takes more and more food to fill it.

But in saying that, thats not an excuse to not eat healthy foods, which is my downfall, i dont eat a lot, but what i do eat is garbage. :p

I think most of these people dont have a good up bringing and during the 20s 30s its make or break.

They end up so fat (25+ stone) they can exercise properly, they end up more depressed and eat fast food to confort them and they just pile it on.

There is no way a person with a decent social life and a job could ever get so big.

didn't see the program ... does the person have a job ? is he relying on his misses for an income to pay for his food ?

and no offence to anyone that calls obesity or alcoholism a disability but i definately dont agree with this. Addiction sure but somewhere in a persons mind they have made a decision to eat/drink in excess. This might of been a sub concious thing of which they had no control but this is why there are people out there to help

anyone that blames the food/drink for their condition is just making up excuses

might be harsh but anyone that large wont live very long and hes got nobody to blame but himself

just because its a "decision" does not mean its not a disability.

from the directgov website:

The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) defines a disabled person as someone who has a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

doesnt mention anything about it being choice/genetic/hormonal/caused my martians

Or kill themselves.

I really can't beleive you advocate bullying people as a way of improving them. What planet are you from ?

So by that definition, laziness is a disability?

it may be an addiction but by god its a hell of a lot easyer to give up than most others (heroin etc) unless you have been brought up to expect everything to be done for you.
people like this make me sick, its no wonder your fat if you're drinking coke like water and eating KFC every day.
heres a hint on how to stop being so fat, PUT DOWN THE FORK!

As much as I think 'oh it's the fault of my genes/missing hormones/etc' is a load of tosh, assuming for a moment such a thing is causing them to be constantly hungry, I can't help but feel they bring the fatness on themselves.

Ok, you feel hungry all the time - you don't have to eat 4 bloody KFC buckets for dinner though do you?

They could at least try and exercise a small amount of self restraint.

When the sign says "Family feast", you don't have to be a genius to work out that eating one of those yourself for dinner is probably a bit much.
