Hammond Critical - Top Gear Car Crash!

It does look like that was an incredibly narrow strip of tarmac to be driving at those sort of speeds let alone trying to break the Land Speed record. Surely these things are normally attempted on wide open expanses of flat land like Pendine Sands or Salt Lakes etc..

All the very best wishes though to Richard, hope he gets well soon and my thoughts are with his family..

I am not interesting in cars or motoring, but I do watch top gear for the great presenters and fun they have. It wouldnt be the same if something happened. But by the sounds of it he should be fine.

This was the last run of the day for them so hopefully to make it worth while they got the land speed record. Also another one for highest speed land crash :(

Either way get well soon Hammond

Trust me when I say....It takes a lot less than you think to end up being permanently paralysed, I should know, I've got some experience!

I really do hope that isn't the case with Richard, I'm sure I read on the bbc news website that he complained of lower back pain when they cut him out of wreckage - just pray he's one of the statistical miracles.

That honour goes to Craig Breedlove @ 675 mph in Spirit of America Sonic 1

He also holds the record for the worlds longest skidmark - Five miles...

yes that's right, he did complain of lower back pain according to the BBC.

Tis sad news indeed. However I have to say that i'm quite shocked at the amount of coverage this is receiving in the news.

Fair enough, last night it was breaking news on the news channels. But this morning to have it as the lead headline on the BBC News site is pretty sad. There are far more important things happening in the news that should be higher up the list. It may be a slow news day, but surely the situation in Thailand should be the most prominent story.

Again, don't take this the wrong way. I like the guy and wish him a speedy recovery. But the way this story is being handled smacks slightly of the ol' Princess Diana / Ken Bigley type thing. For the next 48 hours I guess we'll be having reporters standing outside the hospital giving updates on his condition every 5 minutes, whilst in the studio they interview people that have known him as if he was a senior politician or member of the royal family. I dread to think of the response if the poor guy had died in the crash. :(

The Thai coup, whilst very important is actually a pretty peaceful one and only there to rid the government of the present corrupt ministers. The people and the King support it, so I think we can safely say that the government have no chance. Other than that and more spin on terror plots/extremism to allow the government to enforce new legislation e.g. the removal/restriction of the HRA, there isn't much to report. Also Hammond is a BBC presenter and the fact that the BBC has been involved in such an incident is quite shocking given that usually you would expect the very best safety (after all, we are paying for them).

Its the worlds number 1 car show, Richard is world famous, also he is a BBC presenter and the BBC will be in trouble / investigated over this.

If he had died (and he still might) its safe to say many many millions world over would have been very upset.

I wouldn't. Even though its a nice idea, its too big (80px tall).

I can't stop thinking about all this, poor guy, I really hope although he is "stable" he is in a position to make a 100% recovery.

Get well soon Hammond!
