Hammond Critical - Top Gear Car Crash!

What gets me now is the blame game will begin. Why can't people accept that accidents happen.

All of the news i have seen has been very poorly researched, Jon Snow asking if its the sort of car that anyone could get their hands on

Sky News is really drumming in the "BBC was pushing for the presenters to do the stunt" line. They even claim to have leaked e-mails sent amongst the production crew in the days leading up the event. According to Sky, James May was meant to do it but he wimped out. So then it was decided that Hamster would do it and if he couldn't break the 300mph record then the Stig would have a go as backup. According to Sky the producers of TG made an agreement with the Vampire team to break their record but only going in one direction (i.e. you have to do a full round trip to qualify as a proper land speed record.) If Sky News' reporting turns out to be complete and utter FUD then they should be ashamed of themselves. It's just not right kicking the BBC like this when they are 'down' as it were.

most places seem to be reporting that a tyre blew, and thats what caused the vehicle to loose control

quite exactly how that could be seen as a HSE matter, i dont know. As far as im aware, they had emergency crews and experts at the scene.

But in an accident like that, theres only so much a ambulance can do, in that kind of accident, what he needs is a hospital. So i dont think the BBC could have done much more tbh.

I hope both that he recovers and that this doesn't mean Top Gear is cancelled/toned down :(

I have to say though that imo TG had become a little silly...

Their constant sections on 'see if we can do this - in that - and go round there'

Instead of sticking to car reviews etc. I would say the celeb circuit should have been the most they got to being lightheated/silly, and kept to the car reviews.

Not to say I didnt find some of them funny, but really, should a presenter be doing something like this? I say no. but now its too late :(

thing is though

its what he loves doing

just look at what he does with brainiac etc..

as his wife will testify, hamster did like his stunts, and he knew he was taking a risk. Anybody stepping into a 300 mile an hour jet car would

but he choose to take those risks in order to push the envelope, challenge peoples perceptions as to what motoring journalism was. His envolvement in top gear was crucial to it being the almost comedic like show it is today. Look at the brainiac, and look at top gear, they have such a similar feel. Granted jeremy is also a big influence, but i reckon hamster had a big input into the "feel" of the show.

Thats fine, if someone's has a passion, like Hammond...They accept risks. The BBC however should have seen this a mile away...? They are at fault at the end of the day? He may be experienced etc..but travelling at 300 it just a few days training isnt what I would call experience. He has experience driving cars, not dragsters?

EDIT: jet powered dragsters!

:(

But then it would just be a run-of-the-mill Car programme, like 5th Gear.

I love TG's format, it's pure entertainment. I like watching the silly stunts, the banter. It's 3 blokes doing what us blokes like to do, take the **** out of each other and play with ever bigger and more dangerous toys.

I really hope this doesn't change anything :(

Wow.. that site's now raised £17,075, and it's going up every page refresh. Fantastic to see, i'm sure hamster and the yorkshire air ambulance will be very grateful for all the donations :)

Also the helicopter service is making a good amount of cash from this. I don't think that's right to profit from a celebs accident.

You

because of course donating to a charity that helped save his life is a ridiculous idea

i agree with you on one point, that people should have been donating anyway, they shouldnt only donate because richard hammond was rescued by them, they help tons of people every month

but the fact still remains, the money will be put to good use.

and whats more the use of the word "profit" in your post is completely misplaced.

it does seem a bit bizarre, if the helicopter had rescued some ordinary bloke, no one would have donated a penny.

I think they should have the cash but what motivates people to donate is weird
