Handbrake Use With Automatics!

The auto-hold is used at traffic lights on mine and electronic parking brake comes on automatically when the seatbelt is undone when parking up. It is only taken off is the car has been washed and being left for a while to stop the pads sticking to the disc. Other than that is doesn't need to be touched.

Of course I use it, after all this time I would think if it wasnt actually needed car manufacturers would have stopped putting them on automatic cars by now.

It isnt needed as such, but why would you not fit one? I never ever use a handbrake and haven't for years and years.

I also understand that EU approval for the vehicle requires a parking brake to be fitted to all cars regardless. Manufacturers are now making complying with this more seamless as they introduce electronic automatic parking brakes which tie in with putting the car into P.

in my Jaguar S Type the handbrake will automatically apply itself when you turn off the ignition and pull the key out, to bypass this I have to press down on the handbrake switch whilst removing the key :)
its the same for the XF series

Always use the handbrake when leaving the car on our Auto Accord.

I also use it when on a hill and there is traffic lights.

I also use it when stopped on flat land waiting at more traffic lights.

I just use it, nearly 160k on the clock never had any handbrake related issues.

When I'm on a particularly steep hill, I tend to leave it in gear, handbrake and turn the steering wheel fully to the side. I've seen enough cars roll straight back down hills to do this.

doesn't the RR SRV have an automatic handbrake? Wife's Evoque certainly does...

Always use mine, but its dsg - doesn't roll but certainly seems to move a fare amount if you don't use it... may also be force of habit?

It automatically releases when you engage D, but you have to manually apply it (although it's electronic)

I always use my handbrake on my Scorpio and LS400, but only when parking.

I use Auto Hold, so my handbrake is automatically applied whenever I stop.

Same here, mind you on my golf I have the epb aka electronic handbrake which engages soon as I put the car into P. But through habit I always press it.

Auto hold is always on, can't see why anyone who has it...doesn't use it.

The VW system can be a bit aggravating when in downhill stop start traffic, sometimes the car will come to a stop instead of rolling slowly down the hill due to the system misinterpreting the brake input.

Old Merc with a foot-lever (not really a 'hand' brake if you use your foot) and an hand release.
I always use it just in case.

Part of me is still scared that I'll one day forget and stab the brake on when I habitually go to change gear after driving manual.
Part of me really wants to see how well you can Handbrake Turn in one of these things!!

I'm supposed to let the thing stop before changing from R to D, but since you can go through D-3-2 and back while moving, I figure it doesn't do any harm... Certainly not heard the slightest noise from the gearbox while doing so myself.

Mine doesn't, I can roll mine ever so slowly and only when i press the brake firmly does it stop

Electronic handbrake here too with auto hold. i use it sometimes when pulling off as sometimes it doesn't disengage.. VW tell me there's no fault

Always when parking - and engaged and brakes released before putting in park, to ease the load on the parking pawl.

Basic safety device at the end of the day - should be used.

Mine doesn't do that but just recently had my car for some issues and they lent me a 16plate golf tdi dsg and my god the stop start system was beyond retarded in that. For instance when driving if I was slowly coming to a stop it would do the auto start stop. Usually on my GTD the auto start stop only engages when I'm at a standstill.

Got to the point where I just turned it off as it was annoying me far too much. Think VW probably changed the auto start stop with the newer models.
