Yes it is a bit like Vista MkII, in the sense that a lot of people are blaming the OS for faults with 3rd party drivers.
 
intuitive...difficult term to apply to an operating system. is it really intuitive or just easy because you already know how it works? moving from windows to linux wasnt intuitive for me. easy, ish, but it was all different; nothing was in the 'right' place. working with OSX after using windows for years.....that wasnt intuitive either. New versions of windows however, well, I found that easy of course. Why? because the UI has stayed fundamentally the same for at least the last 17 years when windows first got its taskbar and start button.

'intuitive' is a term best ignored when discussing operating systems, IMO.

Ill be honest I love it. And its not like its a burden as if your not just using it to play music browse photos or show off you can always just press desktop and go back to normal.

Had a very long play on one in an unnamed pc store the other day and its making me want to upgrade and go touchscreen! :p

However cant see me enjoying it with a m+k....
 
Hands staying firmly in pockets. I absolutely hate it and can find nothing positive to say a bout the UI. It reminds me of the new Playstation Store layout and I hate that too.

if some people don't like WIN8/metro, don't buy it. leave people alone when someone say they like win8/metro/features.
 
I am getting used to the Metro start screen now, and it is not too bad. I quite like the live tiles and it works just as well as the old start menu. I can start typing and instantly find my programs, which is often how I used the old one.

As for the other Metro applications I am finding them hit and miss. I run dual 27" monitors and I hardly ever have anything maximised, I usually have other windows scattered around so I have easy access and can see things. If I use the Metro version of IE10 then most of the time 50% of the monitor is being wasted as it is just white space as most websites just use the middle part of the browser with two giant white strips down either side.

I do not like the Metro Mail Application either. It works better at using the space available, but it seems Shift-Delete does not work, which is a major shortcut that I use.

The Metro Music application is another thumbs down, I can't for the life of me find any volume controls in it. I would like the ability to have the music set to a different level to general system sounds.


Overall I like windows 8, I just tend to stay out of the Metro applications.
 
I'm loving it now but it took a while to grow on me. Metro is simply ace to just browse around on a nice big monitor while relaxing. Find some good metro apps that you like and it starts to all make sense, I'm now getting annoyed that I have to go back to desktop to chat to friends in steam chat :o

Bento is really cool for just browsing around or doing some rss stuff.

I can now see why Steam are so worried about W8, what's the point in Steam once the app store gets upgraded and games start to appear on it?
 
I can't say I dislike it, I've yet to make good use of it for my purposes, I originally bought Windows 8 after reading several reviews about it's boot speed & general 'drawing' speed in comparison to Windows 7, stating that it is superior in that aspect. I can imagine it would be an epic feature if I had a touch screen though. For the time being I'm just sticking to desktop mode & waiting a few months for 3rd party drivers to be optimised before I pass judgement.

Your problem is?

Don't like it? Stick to Windows 7 simples?

theheyes that is very true, It isn't Microsofts fault that manufacturers can't build decent drivers. How many different combinations of drivers are there for Windows & people expect Microsoft to keep on top of them all? Beggers belief. Maybe they should go & complain to those people instead.

Never had that problem with Vista or Windows 7 or indeed any Windows iteration going back to 3.1 - oh BTW this is a 3 month old HP Laptop. I have always moved forwards with Windows but this is the first time ever that I have reverted back to a previous version. That for me says it all.

Thank goodness I have my iPad and iMac - separate, at least with the Mac one still gets a great Desktop experience. :D I have yet to read any coherent explanation for putting the extra GUI on a Desktop. Even without the update issue 8 simply doesn't offer the Desktop user a better experience. I thought only Apple users accepted whatever they were given, it seems Windows users are just as bad. :rolleyes:

To me the desktop is exactly the same :confused: Minus the start menu in the corner of course nothing else really has changed in my opinion, I can go a whole day without seeing Metro. Please explain what else they can do to the desktop experience?

The way i see it is Metro is more for the casual PC user, The one who gets scared when they see the desktop ( I know a lot of people who hate the desktop experience). This brings it more in line with their phones/tablets & makes it more simple once they get used to it. Of course there are a few things I like about it also! I much prefer the full screen menu over the old start menu. Plus the taskbars on multiple screens with icons following whichever screen they are on without the need of installing 3rd party software.

As I said in one of the other threads I installed the consumer preview on my nieces laptop (she's 8 & not very technically savvy) I thought she'd struggle to get used to it but she hasn't once asked me how to do something on it, Infact as I've said she has taught me a few little tricks within Metro.

For the older generation of the older Windows I can see people shrugging it off. I've also used Windows since 3.1 & I have no problems with 8, Sure there are a few things I'd like to see improved on which no doubt will happen.

One thing I don't like about Metro is the huge margins between the groups you can create.

Nah, they all have their foibles.

A lot of the advanced gestures in iOS are only discoverable if you search around the settings, and to unmount a removable drive in OSX you have to put it in the bin.

a lot of people with vista did have driver problems on release, myself included. it just goes to show how subjective people can be.

Or there again simply select "eject" or click the arrow above said drive in "finder". :D
 
At the end of the day they both the UI is OK but give it to someone who is new and they are like WTF. Videos all over youtube prove how people react to it and if anyone in here works in a business where they have more than 10,000 users they would know what users want. Windows 8 isn't one of them. Infact Windows 7 is nice and they love it where I work. We are planning the roll out very soon.
