Hi guys,

I've got a hard drive that's failed. It shows up in Explorer but has no size associated with it. If I go to properties, tools and try error checking then I get the message "the disk check could not be performed because Windows can't access the disk".

I've tried running the chkdsk /f command as well and get the message "Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted".

What should I try next? Bear in mind that I have data on there that I'd like to try and recover.

Cheers,

Jed

Dont sound good to me.

One thing to try is on of those file recovery programmes.
I used one a while back on a dodgy drive and managed to recover the files but on the other hand on a couple of occasions it did not work.

Drives dont last forever.

Wish I could be of more help

Give it a go with Active@ undelete (corny name but it worked a few times for me) or one of several free ones. Good luck finding a free one that does most of what you need before you find a feature lock though.

I had an issue with a my HDD when it was new, wouldn't show up under windows but would in the BIOS, fixed it by using CMD to format it to NTFS.
