I have a 500gb seagate hard drive, and when I plug it in, it detects in BIOS, but not in the actual OS, I've tried in 2 pc's and it detects in bios, but not in 'My Computer', got some really important stuff on it so don't want to have to format.

Thanks in advance xx

Check that the drive is appearing in Disk Management (right click on My Computer and pick Manage). It may just need to have a drive letter assigned.

what format is the drive in? If you are taking a HDD froma linux Pc & putting it in a Windows PC it may not show up due to the format type.

Have a look in Disk Management to see if it shows up there

Can you give us some more info on the rest of the machine - motherboard, drive type (IDE/SATA), which controller on the board is being used, OS etc

Gigabyte G33m motherboard, SATA hard drive, no idea what controller its on (says Sata1 on the board if thats what u mean?), Windows XP.

What is the model of the drive, is it a Barracuda 7200.10 by any chance?

If so it is most likely the firmware.

I just had to send my 1TB drive off to seagate for an upgrade.
As well as not being able to see the drive in windows mine wasn't even viewable in the BIOS.

Apparently it is a known problem with this model, check the seagate website for the latest firmware. You will need the serial number off the printed label on top of the drive.

Yeah it is a Barracuda, I'll try it now ^^, it won't erase anything on it will it?

Edit : At this time, we have firmware available for Momentus XT, Barracuda 7200.12, DiamondMax 23, Barracuda LP, Barracuda 7200.11, Barracuda ES.2 (SATA) and DiamondMax 22 drive families Where's the 7200.10

Get backtrack 4 and boot from that and see if you can get your files that way.

Has worked for me when windows wont/cant read the drive

Best of all its free :)

It may not obviously be showing in drive management at the top. But if you look at the lower pane and scroll down, it may well be in there somewhere.

With any luck you can right click on it and click 'activate' (or something similar, my memory is fairly hazy...)

Whoops sorry dude, I was thinking of the 7200.11 that has the biggest issues.
If it is the 7200.10, looks like it may not be firmware issue.

Have you tested the drive yet with seatools?
There is a bootable DOS version as well.

As people have said, try and backup before doing anything.

I feel rather fortunate that my 7200.11, which was bought around the time that most of the problematic drives seem to be from, has always worked perfectly.
