Harmonix Developer on the PS3

Game code simply doesn't split well across multiple processors
Surely this part is incorrect? Isn't this the direction now - multi-threaded games?

I read a recent interview with John Carmack who summed up the PS3 is indeed more powerful (though this is marginal) compared to the 360 however the 360 is easier to code for.

I also stumbled on this:

Pixel Fill Rate without Anti-Aliasing
Xbox 360 - 4.0 Billion Pixels/sec (8 ROPS x 500MHz)
PS3 - 4.0 Billion Pixels/sec (8 ROPS x 500MHz)

???

Whatever you want to believe - there's an article on the web or somewhere else out there which will support it.

Hi all

the Playstation 3 running a "Ray Casting" IRT under linux, using the Cell only... 6SPEs

car_amb_720p.jpg

This one is from SC06 and was run on an IBM blade Qs20, PS3 and an AMD opteron system.. (erly IRT)

irt1245.jpg

(Head to head IRT)

"Next week in the IBM booth at Siggraph 2007 we will be showing a head to head comparison of our QS20 Cell blades and a Linux Playstation3 running the iRT ray-tracer. On head one a Playstation3 will be using its six available SPEs, the RSX will be sleeping comfortably, to ray-trace a 450K triangle scene directly into its 1080p resolution virtual framebuffer. On head two the IBM blade center will deploy 14 Cell processors or 112 SPEs to ray-trace, compress, and deliver frames to a second Playstation3 for display. I won't keep you in suspense, the blade center wins by a large margin. The point of this exercise is not to show that a blade center can out perform a game console but instead how a computational intensive algorithm can scale linearly in performance across many Cell processors and hundereds of SPEs. When the problem is broken down to exploit both data parallelism and Cell's on chip local store bandwith, performance scale very well across many blades. This exercise also shows the versatility of code bases created with the Cell SDK, the same executable targeted for the QS20 blade can be executed on the PS3 without modification."

I'm not saying the PS3 can render a hole game using ray caster graphics, but it shows potential, because of the fact all graphics code handled by the cell is written directly onto the cell and outputted together with the RSX code through HDMI.. So the latency on read from the cell doesn’t really matter :cool:

Anyways I am no expert by any account, if you would like to read up on this my source is: http://gametomorrow.com/blog/index.php
there is a lot more other stuff on there to about how the Cell is more powerful than a G80 at rendering the ray cast version of the "Stanford Bunny", and about ray casting it’s all really interesting stuff, of course it could all be rubbish!!. But just looking at though's images and nowing they have been done on the cell only :D, also if you have Linux running on your PS3 then you can download these IRT's yourself... or view the quick time videos both for free ;)

Thanks
XD-3

PS: also anyone who knows anything about ray casting, i would love to have your input on this and weather the PS3 can output single point raycast floating point operations on the SPE's and anyone who takes the time to read the source your input would be nice to..

I hope it's more like Dirt and Better on the PS3. NOT to get one over on the 360 people, NOT so I can go nur nur, But so we can actually start to be civilized in here and realise both consoles are pretty nice, and capable.

Very very old news piece but I haven't seen anything suggesting otherwise:
Assassin's Creed producer Jade Raymond has let slip what she must have assumed was a minor detail, suggesting the Xbox 360 version of Ubisoft's upcoming release will boast superior crowd AI when compared to the PlayStation 3 version. She points to 360's more-capable threading technology as the reason for this slight improvement.

Well paint me suprised, another day and another dev with a negative opinion of the ps3 architecture !

The thing about these statements is that the first few were attention grabbing and maybe even alittle controversial but after so many well, meh don't care anymore.

With the likes of the excellent looking Uncharted, MGS4, R&C, Killzone 2 and GT5 maybe these devs are right and the platform requires hard work to get results but if the results look as good as these upcoming games ( hopefully they play well too ) then I don't see any problems.

Multiplatform games might be were we see these issues occur more often but if infinity ward can make both versions of cod4 look and run identical and Burnout Paradise can actually look alittle better on ps3 then these titles alone can actually put hole in many of these devs arguments and show some of them up for being lazy and not putting the effort in for both platforms.

p.s. Harmonix make music games, not exactly the pioneers of cutting edge graphics, physis or A.I. , so maybe not the best people to talk about these issues. Note timings and overpriced accessories are probably their strong points.

Yeah developers should sit there, making the game run right on the PS3, sod the gameplay and depth, just make it work right on the failure that is the PS3.

I'm not a fanboy, it's blindly obvious it's a failure, look at the figures. People defending it are just trying to justify buying a £400 doorstop.

Its posts like this (ie utter crap) that ruin the forums for everyone.

Worthy of another quote i thought...........

A £400 doorstop that is in fact a very good blu-ray player and superior dvd player when it comes to upscaling that old image ;) Oh and from the demo's ive seen and played quite an impressive games console to boot :D. I could go on but ill just leave it there. Im definetly not a fan boy, ive had 3 360's and they were all very very good.........until they all decided to stop working

Goodnight :)

That is if all goes well.

Let alone making some games with smooth framerate! Some games have some slowdowns, never mind making games looking as great as this one!

I doubt the developers have the talents to do this stunning graphics, let alone making it working...never mind the average looking games with poor framerate!

I won't hold my breath....

Uncharted says hello, as does Burnout, R&C etc.

Jeeesh - I can't beleive there are threads like this still popping up on a regular basis, and it's the same old people arguing their points! Surely you have all got bored of it by now - I know I have!!!

tbh after reading that article i thought hmm i have still 7 days left to return my 40gb under DAC.

a bit more thought tho tells me its blu-ray capabilites blow away the 360, lossless audio, upscaling and linked to an amp will last a long time if blu-ray wins ofc :>

secondly yeah as the guy up top said that harmonix make music games,id like to see what experience they have with psyhics and soft shadows etc etc

i really hope the ps3 isnt less powerful tho and they get some quality games out soon all i have right now is 3 blu-rays which are awesome and ive ordered 2nd hand motorstorm apart from MGS4 killzone2 and resident evil 5 i cant think of any others that might blow me away.

but heh thats what my 8800 GTX is for ;)

Fill rate is almost identical between the two consoles, so not sure where this dev gets his info from. Because of that i don;t trust his other comments!

In what way does Blu-Ray blow away the Xbox360 aside from lossless audio?

Who's to say he hasn't worked for other companies prior to Harmonix?

but heh thats what my 8800 GTX is for ;)
What? Crysis?

nokkonwood sigh i didnt mean to hurt your 360's feelings im not for either console here either,

1 the 360 doesnt even have a hd-dvd player LOL so blu-ray in the ps3 blows it away.

2 if he did work at another how long has the ps3 been out so its highly unlikely he has worked for anyone else and has any kind of reasonable time to investigate what the console is capable off.

3 more than crysis try cod4 as well and oh hl2 ep2 any game u can think off it *** bitch slap either console.Iq anyone?
