Harry Potter HBO TV series

My only objection is it feels too soon. What is it 22 years since the first film was released? And they still look very good, film making hasn’t moved on that far.

A load of British actors will be jostling for some of these roles. 7 or 8 years of a near certain hit cha-ching.

I fail to see how they can recast Arthur Weasley or Sirius Black, they nailed those roles. In fact casting will be a total nightmare for all the roles.

My first thought too was that is it not a bit soon, but I can see it's still 12 years since the final film was released.

I can only assume they're looking at it doing it again now whilst it's still a big thing, and not in 10-20 years time when it's forgotten about perhaps.

I can't help but feel repeating the storyline will be a bit meh. That's why spinoffs tend to do well because they focus on a much loved character who might not necessarily be part of the main cast.

I am surprised that they have done this deal. The way that Rowling can't keep her mouth shut about a certain subject is hardly conducive to good business. Still, I think a series might be successful. There was a ton of stuff missing from the films.

Twitter crazies aren't reflective of normal people's opinion, she keeps talking and yet she keeps raking the cash in. If this latest report is true she is going to be making bucketloads of cash once again.

It will be a success regardless, you saw how well the recent game did.

Personally I think its too early to remake the book series as the actor portrayals of the characters are far too fresh in people's minds (even though it's been 20 odd years since the 1st). I'm also not sure HBO are the right choice to adapt a children's book series into something that's for children primarily.

A TV show of this could be great, although they will have to film and release a series per year to avoid cast aging issues.

I don’t think JK’s views concerning the protection of women as a group will have too much baring on the usual things (‘race / gender’ swapping) that seem to incite great annoyance like clockwork for some in film and TV.

Actors act. Adaptations are adaptations, etc.

I seem to recall JK being quite pro-‘swapping’: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/harry-potter-tickets.18699520/post-28963437

^that was probably the most jarring swap for me in memory, back from a time when this was quite a new and challenging thing for most people (myself included), particularly with such a well known character.

I don’t think JK’s views extend to declining inclusivity, so I don’t see why this show would be different from any others (including in respect of LGB and T+ characters).

But, I think most LGBT+ actors would decline involvement as it would be too much hard work dealing with noise/criticism/political commentary from all corners. Which is 100% understandable but a bit of a shame all round, as there is no reason why having LGB and T+ characters in Harry Potter needs to be a big deal, providing there isn’t an heavy overemphasis on this at the expense of creating an exciting adventure story for all ages.

The Disney ‘Strange World’ film received a lot of noise for having gay characters but that was a terrible film that did nothing interesting with ANY of its characters. I’d more than welcome anything with all sorts / types of characters so long as it’s engaging and meaningful.

The casting is going to have to be spot on for it to have the charm the films did. The wooden performances in the LoTR series absolutely killed it as I didn't feel anything for the characters.

The leap in CGI and additional content they can include from the books due to it being a TV series is a given.

This is what the moaning minnies miss - gender, race, orientation, shopping habits, none of that matters if the casting is right and they all interact well.

The acting in the Potter films is pretty awful from a lot of the child actors. You just accept it because thats how it was and a lot of people grew up with it. I never watched the films until I was a bit older and it made me laugh the first time. I've accepted it now and you just kind of go with the flow.

Even at the time they made me cringe. They are not good actors.
I guess though, that in the original films, they could have been cardboard cutouts and they still have been a success. People are going to be a little more critical this time around.

^ the acting in the first few films is clunky, those eyebrows from Watson :p, but from rewatching them all last year the first film is by far away the best IMO. It has this ‘enchanting / magical’ vibe that the other films lack.

The 3rd / 4th books are the best, but those stories carry their respective films.

Is it going to be more oriented to adults and thus a darker version of Potterverse or sticking true to books so appealing to all ages, I'd like to see grim dark Potterverse with terrifying magic

Will this be the new JK Rowling thread I wonder? The controversy around her will be bound to follow. She is synonymous with women's rights and the friction with TRAs.

HBO rarely make duffers, so even though I'm not a Hogwarts nut, I'd be very interested to commit to this.

Would be really foolish if people were bothered enough to let it be. I hope one day people can get over their obsession fo bringing jk Rowling into anything Harry Potter
