Has the gaming industry gone stale or am I in a gaming mid life crisis?

I cant do the indie games, 8bit, 16bit graphics should be left in the "i cant wait till better graphics come out" bin.

I am fully aware graphics don't make a good game, but all the same.

Your loss.

Indie games are where most of the creativity is these days. The AAA devs are pushing the graphics boundaries, but that's pretty much all they're progressing.

So you can complain that games are uninspiring, but if you demand cutting edge graphics you'll continue to get more of the same.

Cutting edge graphics demands that a huge amount of development time (and budget) goes to the artists and modellers. That stuff aint cheap.

And the more they spend (on said artists), the more mass appeal they're going to want the game to have, meaning that you can't afford to make a unique/experimental/niche game anymore.

Which is where indie devs come in. They can create what they want, unrestrained by budget concerns and the need to recoup massive development costs.

It's very much one or the other, not both.

i find if i play too much online multiplayer competitive fps type games then it kinda ruins me for single player games for some reason.

What about dying light ? The devs for those games have done an amazing job and that's only two games, there are plenty of games out there that dont fall into the cash cow category

But dying light is a rehash of Dead island & left for Dead etc, it's got the same type weapons where you can electrify your blades etc, Same type loot trunks etc.

Dying Light is well worth a play through. Very good.

Another game I played recently which I loved was Ryse Son of Rome. If you've watched the spartacus TV series and love pretty games then this short game is epic!

Not to mention GTAV and the Witcher 3 in the very near future.

.

It is if you haven't played Dead island etc etc. I'm playing Dying Light now & already getting bored because of similarities to other games, however I did enjoy those games nevertheless but you can have too much of a good thing & this is a good example.
Nothing is really new unless your relatively new to gaming, any of us who played from the 1990's will have seen it all in one form or another

gaming is just stale as hell.

Dying light my son bought and I think I played about 20minutes before I got bored and oddly enough I really liked the first dead island game

I don't have a problem so much with the games (although I do) - my problem is with DLC. Back in the day, product testing used to mean that by and large because the internet didn't exist, a product had to be up to a decent standard before it was released.

Now you have day one patching, server patching, multiplayer patching - patch, patch, patch, and then you get DLC (not expansions) that break games even more. It's exhausting.

The market is saturated, you're spoilt for choice. Innovation is risky and expensive. It's not a 'success' unless it's another Minecraft as far as investors are concerned. Rehashes still sell well with a good bit of marketing, no point not milking it if it's still coming. You'll get the yearly FIFA, CoD and Smash releases until people stop buying them.

DLC is just content that you download. You can't really compare games from "back in the day" to today. Hardware configurations are a lot more diverse nowadays, and there are a lot more computers out there along side games being significantly more complicated.

There is nothing inherently wrong with "DLC", it's just that some publishers or developers are releasing awful DLC.

I've noticed in the past years, i can't stand shooter games no more, except for wolfenstein new order which was great, all other AAA titles have been so boring i couldn't complete single players nor even play online, felt the same just different looks. Tho I still very much in love with RPG, man i can't wait for Witcher 3, if this game does not deliver i will be greatly disappointed :/. Tho unlike previous years this year looks realy good for rpg fans. Too bad MMO has died, there isn't a single game that interests me even to try, i miss old Lineage 2 days, those were great :)

There isn't much that holds my interest these days and I would love titles from many years ago to have sequels made. Having not played games on the PC for a good while, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the new wolfenstein game and Dying Light though. I also can't wait for GTAV, it looks fantastic.

GTA SA when it came out was astonishing, the story, the budget and just the amount of stuff they put into it was amazing! Samuel L ******* Jackson as a corrupt cop! That game had style and love put into the game which you could feel. Samuel L jackson, Chris Penn, Peter Fonda, James Woods, haha Danny Dyer, William Fichtner, Axl Rose, Andy Dick and more. Those talents must have cost most of the budget, but it was worth it because thats what the devs wanted, an A+ experience. And that's what they gave us, a truly remarkable game.

Nowadays everything is just about milking people getting as much money as possible. Those companies (EA, Activision and Ubisoft mainly) have become businesses pure and simple. All they care about is profit, and will push game developers into making games other than intended.

That just means unfortunately for the devs that actually care about making a good original game, they can't get the funds from these big corporations because they're not designed around maximizing profits.

That's where thankfully Kickstarter and others come into play, now these game devs have a way to get those funds needed and can make the game how they want, and that's why indie development is becoming such a good thing. Wasn't Pillars of Eternity crowd funded?

Anyways, no it's not just you. Games are getting stale, even some pretty much just reskinned versions of the previous game title. We do get a few gems thankfully

Hopefully things will pick up this year. Looking out for:

Star Citizen (Hopefully)
The Witcher 3
New Deus Ex
GTA V
Batman Arkham Knight

I'm not sure if the majority of developers today are playing it safe by trying to maximize profits with the same old tried and tested method...

If you're fed up with the same tried and tested formula then you're going to be disappointed with the majority of those. They're sequels so are going to follow the same formula as the previous games.

Hype is a big problem with today's games. Games are hyped up so much that the majority of them fail to meet the expectations people have for them once they are released. Sometimes I think it's better to ignore what's going to be coming out in the future and just dip into the vast number of high quality games we already have at the moment. Why wait for The Witcher 3 when there are many highly rated RPGs already? You can't have played all of them :)

There's also a larger variety of games today than there's been before. Bored with FPS and RPGs? Why not dip into a card game like Hearthstone or Scrolls? Or try out something like Football Manager 2015? Or a spot of Pac-man Champtionship Edition DX+ (this is great, by the way!) or a Metrovania like Guacamelee (this is also great!), or, well you get the idea :)
