Haswell Overclock Thread

got 4.5 stable @ 70c

Had 4.6 @ 71c but had bsod think need to up the vcore but would rather keep it around 1.21

Nice and cool

Hi!
Just upgraded my PC from Q6600 B3 @3.2ghz to a Haswell I7 and I'm abit rusty at overclocking.

Overclocking to 4.6Ghz
@1.143750 vcore, Passed aida64 but failed OCCT
@1.15 vcore, failed aida64 but passed OCCT
(30mins each with AVX for OCCT).
Do I need to worry about instability around those vcore? I been running [email protected] on adaptive mode and havent crashed at all.

You'll probably need a bit more volts in there, I believe I'm at 1.32V with an adaptive voltage set while the AIDA64 stresstest is running (stresstests somehow pull the voltage up a bit more than set in the bios). You didn't mention temperatures, but at those voltages you can probably bump them up a bit more.

Temperatures with aida64 is max 85c while OCCT max 92c. Too high?

I did pass both aida64 and occt on 4.4ghz with just 1.095v and temp 75c max. Maybe I should go back to 4.4ghz

When using Aida64 which settings do people use? I use the 'Stress FPU' which seems to produce the highest temperatures. Is this the one most people use when testing their O/C?

@killoc: 92c is certainly pushing things a bit. If you can lower the voltages (80-85 max under stress) and remain stable at 4.4 then go that way. 1.095v sounds far too low though, what are you using to show that value? (CPU-Z 1.64.0 gets it wrong... and 1.65 is just out). Your temps should be much lower if that is the correct voltage.

@Ghuraba: I use all of Stress CPU, Stress FPU, Stress cache and Stress system memory. I don't think any of these individually make for a very balanced "real life" test.

Something weird is going on here. 1.4V should basically fry your CPU, and 1.152v is unlikely to provide a stable 4.4, though you haven't mentioned what cooling you are using.

Seems the value CPU-Z returns for you can't be trusted. Do you get the same value for CPU Core in AIDA64? (Statistics tab in AIDA64's stability test, and/or the CPUID button there for AIDA's version of CPU-Z).

Dont forget I'm only running my memory speed at 1600mhz. Quote from "3 Step Guide to Overclock Your i7 / i5 Haswell Platform" linked by lettuce on comment #124

But – and this is a big, bold, italicized, very notable but - overclocking a Haswell CPU at the same time as overclocking the RAM will reduce your IMC’s ability to overclock or reduce your CPU’s ability to overclock. You have to choose one or the other

I doubt I can keep my memory speed over 2000mhz+ while keeping the same voltage and cpu speed.

@illuz - Dont plan to delid it yet.

That's a great oc at those vaults, I'm tempted to reduce my ram speed for 4.6GHz testing, I currently at 4.5ghz 1.152V with RAM at 2133mhz.
What are your temps like?

too low volts get it cranked!! ;) you can do better than 4.6!

You got a brilliant chip there, what cooling you using? temps? I have tried 4.6 at 1.2V with ram at 2133 but temps went into mid 80's within a few seconds of stressing and I didn't feel comfortable with that, my cooler isn't brilliant Antec 902 so may have to get better cooling for higher clocks.

well i have a full watercooling setup. and it still get damn hot in stress testing hehe.

but normal use max around 60 so thats fine with me.

i may delid at some point, but i had a lot of hassle setting the while thing up through one reason or another so im just happy to use it right now :)
