Behind you... Naked!
Up until only a short while ago, my main PC was my Q9550 in a good old Gigabyte DS4.

Kingston DDR2 sorted my RAM out, NVidia GFX and XFI Fartality Audio, while the HDs were 3 x Samsung 1TB Jobs and 3 x Pioneer DVDRW Drives... Lovely jubbly.

Never had a hiccup in the many years that we have been together ( Apart from the odd Creative-0 dissappearo vanishing act now and then ) But otherwise spanking.

I then get hold of an I7... Its a basic affair and the Mobo is dire and so my 14 year old daughter get a quick present. Its flawless I have to admit but the Mobo has no PCI slots and the BIOS allows ZERO adjustments and no way to disable Hyperthreading and therefore I dont want it.

I get hold of another Mobo and an I3 CPU. That Mobo does not like teh I7 but loves the I3... Ok fine I get anoither Mobo.

This time that one wont let me play above 4GB?

Even though by now, cos I mgone to DDR3 I am buying loads of RAM like there is no tomorrow... I have 3 sets of 16GB, 2 sets of 8GB 4 pairs of 4GB and a billion odd sticks of ... misc ram. ( Slight lie )

But I decided to sod the lot and buy a new Mobo.

Saturday I got it. I also got an I7 borrowed off my mate to compare.

turns out that the other Mobos were right... My CPU has an issue above 4GB

his CPU is spanking with 32GB in it, mine farts.

Mine, while certainly nippy in converting Video from AVI to DVD, plays BF3 roughly on par with my old x2 3800...WTF?

My main AMD has just gone from a Phenom 9550, to a Phenom 2 955 ( 2.2 to 3.2 ) and I triekd BF3 in that.... Lovely.

So, enough is enough... In the last 2 and a bit months I have spent over £800 on a junk PC ( I got 3 Mobos and 2 CPUs and almost a half Terabyte of RAM though ) and its utterly useless to me.

Im going back to AMD.

( Sorry, I just need to whine a little )

And at no point along the line did you think to RMA any of it?

It'd would be a shame if the problem was something stupid like you running 32-bit Windows.

Sounds to me like you were spending all your money on crappy motherboards and huge amounts of memory ...why didn't you just buy one known quantity decent board and some RAM to start with?

I also gather that if your I7 is faulty ...that it was a used buy? ...typically if a cpu is faulty it will either work or it wont work, or it will require much more voltage than it should to work at stock speed. Does it have any warranty left on it?

None of this seems to be Intel's fault. And you do have the DSR and good old fashioned RMAing at your disposal. Unless you bought it all used of course.

id laugh so hard if that was the case. yeah, i would totally have rma'd it.
but tbh, with the stupid buying he has done, and the lack of thinking to rma it, he seems a bit simple, probably why he prefers amd.

Are you sitting the CPU properly? Bent pins on the board can cause the motherboard not to read the DIMM slots correctly.

that sucks did you buy one of the older i7s i know somebody that has 1st gen i7 and he's mobo is balls and he cant find a good new one cause its old tech

So your moaning about Intel because of your purchasing errors? And maybe one dodgy CPU?

Yup.

1 - The Original Mobo works perfectly, or so I thought. It never did crash and it looked like it worked fine. it just simply had no PCI slots, and thats why I wanted a better board.
2 - The second board that I bought is also working fine but it crashed with the I7

They parts are all second hand and so RMA is simply NOT an option. especially since there is nothing wrong with them.

Yes, all these parts ARE second hand, except for my latest purchase which, AFAIK is supposed to be one of the best motherboards out there. I can RMA this board, however, it was only AFTER that, that I kind of realised that all the parts are perfectly fine, it was the CPU and not the boards after all.

As you say, with CPUs they are usually either working or dead. This particular CPU simply works well but cannot handle above 4GB

Its a lot more complex than I have made out in this post. I have posted asking for advise on here and the replies I got back then were of things that I had already tried.

RMAing is not an option because the parts that I have, all work fine.

Yes, and the I3 works great in the bards as does my mates I7, it is only my CPU that gave me the problems.

The second board, is an Asus and thats fine, but when I first has issues with the I7 and it crashing after a day or two, it was suggested to up thje volts and this would cure it... it did not. it does seem to work perfectly with any CPU except for mine.

Similarly my CPU works flawlessly in any board as long as I only use 4GB

that sucks did you buy one of the older i7s i know somebody that has 1st gen i7 and he's mobo is balls and he cant find a good new one cause its old tech

Yeah its a 1156 860

should have stuck with the q9650 and clocked it's **** off.

You misunderstand... I have done.

I dont get rid of any of my PCs.

Oh, and its a 9550 not a 9650.

Thats why I got the 9550 Phenom too... To say that I had both a 9550 CPU in a DS3 Mobo in both Intel and AMD Flavours!

Sad or what?

Its flawless I have to admit but the Mobo has no PCI slots

Next you're gonna say that you still want ISA slots, with IDE, AGP and some lovely serial and parallel ports on the rear I/O. :D

Usually Intel is excellent for RMAs, why not ask them? Also, what's the point in disabling Hyperthreading?

Don't get a FX-8150. The complaints about the power draw, heat and crappy IPC will start rolling in. :p

You didnt get what I said... Its has NO PCI slots...

You are forced to use onboard EVERYTHING!
It is NOT UPGRADEABLE IN ANY WAY!

I posted about this very board a while back and then I was pointed to the ASus & I3 setup

Thats what I am currently in the process of doing.
Up until now, I have assumed that it is the Motherboards that are at fault, but it turns out that its the CPU.
I posted about this recently.

Disable Hyperthreading?
The software that I am using does not seem to work well at all with Hyperthreading. Its great with multicore, but not with HT - I did post about this a while back.

But, just as a side note, with multi-core CPUs... Whats the point of having hyperthreading?

Don't get a FX-8150. The complaints about the power draw, heat and crappy IPC will start rolling in. :p

LOL from me?
Cheeky sod.
Although I was considering the 8120 I have to admit HeHeHe

Hey, I am running 4 PCs in my attic 24/7 purely because I cannot be bothered to wait for them to boot up when I go in there, I am not bothered one jot about power draws. Plus the temps of the attic are great for clocking the nipples off PCs so thats out too!

I think what he was getting at, is that PCIe is the standard for expansion cards now, not PCI, many if not most boards do not come with PCI anymore.

Well I've heard of a few faulty chips which will only work with 1 core enabled in the BIOS but not one which only works with 4GB RAM installed. Also I know you said you don't get rid of any of your old stuff but considering you bought most of it 2nd hand you could probably resell without losing much money (other than on the faulty i7 chip...)

Seems like someone got the joke. :)

Z68/77 boards with PCI slots are still very common BTW.

Now this may sound silly is your windows disk second hand? Is it an 32 bit oem verison ? Maybe why your only registering 4Gb

If the OP only has 32 bit Windows...oh dear. Though I will assume that he's got 64 bit Windows. ;)

Sorry I should have been clearer.

IT HAS NO PCI PCIX OR PCIE SLOTS
EVERYTHING IS ONBOARD AND THERE IS NO WAY TO UPGRADE IT
EVEN THE BIOS IS UNTOUCHABLE, there is one screen that shows info but NOTHING can be altered.

Other than that, its a flawless board.

Nothing wrong with any of it bar the one I7 CPU, as I now know.
I may still be keeping it because its ok with 4GB and lets be honest but 99% of things will run just fine with 4GB

This sounds like something a "simple" person would say. Nothing wrong with my amd rig.

I ignored that post.

LOL no, I have not used any 32Bit O/S since about a week after XP64 came out!

Windows disks are NOT second hand no, but that would not explain why my I7 was only seeing 4GB and the other i7 and the i3 were seeing all the RAM I tried.

Yes, I know enough to not do THAT much of a bugger up surely, but no, I have not used 32Bit for a fair few years now.
