Having a Vasectomy

Weirdly enough, I suggested this to my missus and she was against it. The basis being that you never know what's going to happen in the future (if she died and I met someone new etc). So ya know, think it through because you never know what the future holds.

I had mine done now almost 8 years ago now and for me it was the best thing I did. We have two amazing children and I do not want a third or more with my wife or heavens forbid anything happen to her, with any partner in the future. My wife had taken the pill for many years before and I thought it was the right thing to do to have the snip once our children where born. Took approx 30 minutes with no pain and was in fact shopping straight afterwards, recovery was no issues. The only issue I had was the surgeon was called DR Contractor :D and the woman who assisted the routine surgery was quite cute and I had seen her out drinking a few times in the town and chatted about stuff with my "Gear" on full display :D.

Same, 30 mins, chat to the nurse whilst the consultant did the work downstairs. Injection was a bit sore for a few seconds, after that didn't feel anything.

Job done, headed home via Costa, sat on the couch for the rest of the day watching TV, back to work the next day.

Wear some cycling shorts/lycra shorts post op to keep things securely in place. No issues post surgery.

40 years old, 2 healthy kids - job done.

I'm on the list waiting for a date for the chop shop.
Its all being handled by BPAS in my area and I had my consultancy last week with the nurse. The appointment meeting itself was very good and the nurse explaining everything very well as well as giving the tackle a good examination.

What I didnt expect was to be sat in a waiting room with a bunch of chav teenage girls waiting literally waiting for their abortions, one of them was talking about only being 21 and on her 4th abortion.....wtf!

Anyhow looking to getting it sorted, only got one daughter but she is nearly 10 now and I'm 40 in May so deffo do not want anymore.

I looked into it funnily enough when the wife said it was time to get it done :p the nhs information said there was a chance of permanent ball ache from which they don't know why or how but it's a chance.

So that'll be a no then.

Hey, something I wouldn't have to worry about! I have it already. Idiopathic, which is a nicely formal way of saying "we have no idea what's causing it". They even had a look around when they had my scrotum cut open for another reason, but found no cause. Apparently it just happens sometimes. Maybe it will go away. Maybe it won't. Probably not, given that it's hurt for over 20 years now, but they don't really know since they don't know the cause. It feels like excessive pressure, but I've no idea if it really is or if that's just my brain sticking an explanation on it for the sake of doing so.

You get used to it because you have to. I'd rather not, but it is how it is. Could be worse - I have pain only in one testicle rather than both. They don't know the reason for that either.

I also looked at the NHS website when it was suggested I should have this procedure done. Reading the first page of comments about people's lives who have been absolutely ruined kind of put me off :D

I had one done aged 30 when our third child was around 6 months old as we knew we didn't want any more kids. Roll on 17 years and no regrets or complications, but then I was/am sure that I'll stay happily hitched. So, as stated above you should really only do it if you are sure that you will stay with the Mrs and/or never want any more kids.

Interestingly enough I was reading some info about RISUG/Vasalgel this morning.

Would much rather something less permanent. But I guess those are still a few years off.

Yeah, Vasalgel would be a no-brainer for me. Got two kids, but am still only 34. I feel a little too young for anything permanent.

Unfortunately, they've got no funding from big-pharma, as there is little profit seen in it (not sure why), and it'll be a few years at least before it hit the market, if ever.

I used to work in a theatre and vasectomy's were very regular. Very simple and quick, with only a few tools involved. There was one guy who said he was going back into work that afternoon.

So a pro would be, easy and routine, probably only really needing a day or three off work (depending what you do)
I suppose the only real con is your little guys! They want to swim dammit! :D

Just make sure you've had a good long think about whether it is what you really want? I've no idea how old you are and whether or not never having anymore kids is really what you want.

I have friends who have had the snip and they have had no issues at all. They are all very happy without the worry of potential pregnancy.

I'm glad i had it done @31, it was within a couple of weeks after the birth of our 2nd child, 2 children is enough for me! and this just means we can now fully concentrate on the next chapter of our lives never worrying another might happen! (2nd wasn't planned)

The worst bit was the smell of burning flesh knowing where it was coming from

Sorry, I only realised now that I didn't really tell the back-story.. damn that wine! I'm 42, I have 2 girls, 9 and near 6, been with my wife 14 years this Summer, she's 45. Her 'implant' is about up, I have several mates at school who have had the snip, it's all positive, judging by the fact it's already on page 2, this is one of those topics people know about but kinda keep secret lol! The only thing holding me back is the 'what if?' factor. I love my kids dearly, but if my family got taken away from me, I would like the ability to start again as it were. Hard to broach this one with the missus as you can probably appreciate, was wondering what other people have said/done about this? 42 is no age really, but I also understand my wife feeling insecure, gah it's a headache I could do without tbh, (let alone the potential ballache!)

Is it on the NHS or can you get it done privately?

If the latter does it cost much?

NHS - initial "interview" from sexual health clinic about the risks/are you sure etc etc - then local hospital for the op, in at 9am and out by 9.30. Wife knew the consultant doing the snip for me so they chatted afterwards......

I'm so manly, even if they cut the testicular tubes, the semen would find another way, probably through my tear ducts. They'd have to cut those too.

I got disconnected a few years ago, it was nothing. Smell was a bit nasty and the tugging feeling in your gut is a bit weird while the tube are being pulled. No ill effects. 2 kids are enough for us!
