HD2900 pro overclocking thread.

decto is running an E4300 @3300 vs my 5000+ @2900 Thats why he gets better scores I like AMD but the proof is there in the benches...The core chips are very very strong i carn't get close with my cpu holding it all up

As a little demonstration I clocked my CPU back to 1.8Ghz

753 900

3DMark Score 7905 3DMarks

SM 2.0 Score 3465 Marks

SM 3.0 Score 4197 Marks

CPU Score 1589 Marks

I tried to get somthing in the middle but today my PC will only run @ 1.8 or > 3.0. I'm not sure what is going on but hey .... back to 3.3 for me!

TBH though, Moving my GT's to a Dual Core AMD shows no real drop in performance, Bioshock plays at near identical frame rates as it's GPU limited at the higher settings so there's plenty of life in the AMD's unless of course you're playing a benchmark.

Sounds good to me :)

Powercolor 2900PRO with Powercolor 2900XT bios flashed, no software clocking done.

So 740/825 I guess.

Anyone with a quad core on one of these cards ? Now I'm interested as it looks like with a good cpu these cards perfrom better than 8800GTS 320MB !

But my 8800 GTS 320Mb scores would increase dramatically as well if it was on a quad core. ;)

Well you'd still be limited by the 320MB of ram :p

I get 10,400 on 06 with my card but that was with cpu at stock, will have to rerun 3dmarks with cpu on oc and gfx card on oc as well tonight and see!

Just out of interest what drivers are people using with their 2900 Pro? :)

Cool, would you be able to see what you get at stock cpu speed and also what type/speed/size ram ?

Cheers dude!

Not on 3dmark06. A 8800 GTS 320Mb scores the same as a 8800 GTS 640Mb as 3dmark06 does not use up more than 320Mb.

So you'd still get a massive boost from a quad core as 3dmark06 is heavily skewed in favour of cpu.

Here's a 3D Mark 06 Score for my old 320 GTS on my Quad running at 3.2 for comparison.

11,385 under Vista

Compare URL: http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=3219952

The Clocks are 630/950/1450

Looking at the latest review of the 2900Pro/XT the 320 seems to win most of the benchmarks at stock over the XT. Interesting read. I'm assuming 4X AA is killing the card?

Thats over 2000 points increase for just changing the cpu.

That's not a score to put your nose down at though ;).

Too right

3dmark is overrated.... and very loaded to the CPU.

With a Quad I'd easily be in the 13K's

In reality unless you have a badly coded game which sucks up CPU then your GPU will be the limiting factor. In these cases there is not so much difference in perfomance for a range of CPUs.

Waiting for a couple of Molex to PCI-E and I'm going to test out my card in my AMD opty DC 2.6 and then compare a couple of games.

Shame there is a postal strike

How are you guys overclocking?

I'm just using the Catalyst control panal overdrive feature for basic clocking.

Atitool is ok but the adjustments are very coarse ~ 17Mhz on the core !! wheras Catalyst is 5Mhz though I need this to get the memory above 900

You can use Rivatuner as well though I've stuck with ATItool as it has options to change fan profiles etc.

For everyday running I flashed the BIOS to an XT of the same brand to give me higher stock clocks and don't use any other OC

Dont you need the 8 pin connector to use Overdrive?

I belive so, I'm sure a certain auction site will have some converters.

On my Corsair the additional pins are both ground so server no real purpose.

Cosair are offering replacement 8 pin cables if you have an older HX unit with only 6 pin.

Otherwise ATItool works fine for OC... just a little coarse.

Besy option is a BIOS flash to XT
