Hi everyone,

my friend is talking about selling me a HDD he has and I am interested, however he says it passes the S.M.A.R.T test fine but it fails the error count on the test.

What exactly does that mean?

if its failing the error count I wouldn't go near the drive.

I have a 1TB WD portable that is getting error counts and then it went on to clicking. can still access the drive and copy stuff over to it fine but I have stuffed it in a draw never to be used again as it will fail.

get him to use HD tune and send you the results on the health check tab.

this will highlight anything in red or yellow if there is any issues

if it was me I wouldn't bother.

if its failing at something to me its a warning something is wrong. it may last for months or it might last for a few weeks.

check the warranty on the drive if you can get the serial number on the manufacturers website as it maybe under warranty still.

if you are tempted install HD tune and then check the health tab, anything in red or yellow I wouldn't bother as you want a reliable drive for a backup HDD
