HDD for PS3 to be optional Extra - from Sony's own mouth.

I see from this thread that no one has pointed out that the 360 may not come with a HDD in the Core pack, but the Core pack is only £209,thats right ONLY £209!

Can you really see the PS3 coming in below £349? Thats without the HDD, so the PS3 Premium Pack would make it £460ish using the same % increase that the 360 Premium commands over the core pack.

So lets see, something 75% more expensive than the Xbox, potentialy offering nothing more, or you could get a 360 Premium with all the toys included and still probably save £70, thats not including any price reductions MS make when the PS3 is eventually released.

Has their been any offical price for the PS3 yet?

They've not even 100% confirmed what it's all going to look like in the end yet... I think once we know more than just a table of numbers of gigafloobles and megatriangle numbers, we'll probabl then start getting an idea on prices. :p

Why does everyone seem to think it will cost loads more than the xbox, Espically with the cell cpu being so cheap to manufacture?

The Xbox 360 standard package is actually the Premium version. Don't believe me? Check with MS, or just check the Xbox 360 'premium' box, it makes no mention of 'premium'. Other MS products do (such as Windows Mobile Premium). The core pack is basically just a cheap version to entice ppl who don't want to spend a lot on a console. The core version DOES mention 'core'. Core as in barebones, the bare essentials, the core product, etc.

However, I most certainly don't like MS releasing a console without the HD, no matter the cost. It makes developing a game harder, requires stupid 'select a storage device' screens, and limits what the target audience of the core pack can do. You buy a core pack because you don't play as much, and will want cheaper games? Well that's what Live Arcade is for - oh wait you'll want a HD for that (memory card is only 64MB, thats 2 or 3 games at most - without saves). You no longer have virtual memory (the 'cache' on the old Xbox), meaning games can't preload lots of content on the drive for quick loading should you die, or for supporting larger levels.

The same reasons I don't like the Core skipping the HD, are the same reasons I don't like the PS3 skipping the HD. Add-ons for any console are almost always a bad idea. They don't get good take-up, they cost a FORTUNE (just look at the separate HDD for the 360), and they make it harder for developers. Having said that, Sony love to make things hard on developers so this shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

Doubt the PS3 will be more than £300 tho, if it is more than that - selling it will start to become very difficult. A baseline PC is about £500, and if parents are going to be buying this console they'll prefer a £500 PC (for school / homework) over a £500 games machine. Even the 18+ people will find it difficult to justify £500 for a games console when a console with identical graphics can be had for £300 less.

Because its Sony and they tend to be expensive for everything lol
and the cell might be cheap to manufacture, but cost a shed load to develop

Before sony didnt have anyone to compete with though, if they release it for much more than the 360 casual gamers wont buy it, and there will be many hardcore players who just cant afford it.

Because even Sony have said it's going to be expensive.

Expensive to make or buy? Expensive is a relative term. An xbox 360 is expensive to me.

They'll mean expensive in terms of standard console prices. The GeForce2 Ultra when it came out was 'expensive' because it was £150 more than the previously most expensive consumer graphics card in mass production.

*edit*
Clearly don't get the point i'm putting across here do you?

*edit* The comment about it failing made me say this about the ps3 not having it standard but neither does the xbox as the standard package the "Core" does not have it. You are paying more for the add-ons such as a HDD with the "Premium" as you would if buying the add-on for the ps3 except it's not sold in a console package as far as i know.

The standard Xbox 360 is the "Core" not the "Premium" which had you're HDD that came with it.
Id argue the point that the standard system is the premium package, with the core system being the budget friendly package.

You could argue that, but really the "Core" is just the console on it's own so kind of makes it the standard, then you can pay more for a better package above the standard console.

Thats just my opinion, and you're opinion too doesn't mean i'm wrong or you're wrong.
