HDD for PS3 to be optional Extra - from Sony's own mouth.

just to throw my hat in the ring,
The lack of backwards compaitibility on the 360 really does annoy me, i have a load of games i would love to play like moto gp3, rs2 that i cant, so it does annoy me i have to keep my original xbox hooked up. And i have to then play it through my TV when my 360 goes through my monitor which is better so she can watch tv as i play

This is whole thread is just fanboyness from both camps, its great.
The xbox fanboys saying its easy to wind up and PS fanboys taking the bait. Cracks me up. Was gonna join in but cannae be buggered lol

Not a 'fanboy' of either here but I do find it funny how quickly people leap to the defense of one side or the other, I've said all along I'll be buying both consoles.

My daughter seems to think she'll be getting a PS3 to replace her PS2. No chance, It'll be mine! :p

I am surprised that Sony wouldn't have the HDD as standard, it would just make things easier to have a standard console, that's kinda the whole point really. We've had all these discussions about the 360 HDD so it's kinda pointless going over the same stuff again.

As for the backwards compatibility, they do seem to be doing a half arsed job about it on the 360. It doesn't affect me at all but a friend of mine still has Xbox games he wants to play that won't play on the 360 so he has to keep his original Xbox knocking around.

To add my two-pennies worth:

If the PS3 doesn't come with a HD, then this *may* be a good thing.

Now I am an Xbox Fanboy, but I'm also fair. How many people (names not mentioned), have the HD for the Xbox360 yet have 'moaned' how ridiculous MS were for "only putting in a 20Gb drive, and 7Gb of that is used up"?

Now if Sony are not bundling a HD in, you're gonna get a camp of people saying "Pah, silly Sony, bad on you", but you're also gonna get some people who realise the potential to say "Hey actually that's pretty good idea Sony because I'm not restricted in having what YOU tell me to, I can add my own with my own size".

This is of course if Sony decide to allow the end user to add in their own sized drive, which, knowing the forward thinking of them and how they want their PS3 to go, could actually be a possibility.

Nice one wyrdo, least she will give you an excuse to the missus if she moans 'its not for me its for the kid lol

Sony done it with the PS2, HDD an optional extra, but even then only in some countries, i am surprised some folk are surprised lol

i would never play xbox games on xbox360, don't see the point in having a next gen system to play old games on, its a bonus if it does thats all i see it as.

Anyway who's gonna play their PS2 game on PS3 when most people admit that the PS2 is crap and hidden away under their bed. I can see it now "Look my Ps3 plays PS2 games"

In the mean time while your waiting for over a year to get your ps3's i'm enjoying my xbox360

whoopie for you

Can't see how its going to fail, they can do what they like, price it how they like, it will still sell in droves regardless, and thrash the 360, its a Playstation, as long as its got that name it can't lose, ppl are blind.

i don't think anybody has said PS3 is gonna fail, why should it, after all its not much better than the xbox360 thats out now whilst PS3 lovers who buy anything with playstation logo on it can wait till next year for something no better and probably higher priced

So you've never gone back to a game you liked? I play old games on my PC all the time, and if I had a 360 of my own, I'd be playing my older Xbox games on it as the 360 has just 1 game I want to play on it at the moment still, same will happen with the PS3. It's a nice feature to have, and if the feature wasn't the, people would kick up a right fuss about it. There's no real point to argue against having backwards compatibility, as it doesn't get in the way, you don't have to use it, and it also tidies your entertainment centre up moving away the old PS2 / Xbox.

On topic again, I'm not suprised that Sony are doing this, as it's going to give them some extra cash when people need to buy HDDs for all their games that require the HDD.

One thing that would be interesting is if it allowed you to plug in any old USB HDD to save to, and read things from, giving people a wider choice of things to do with it.

This isn't going to hurt sales at all still, as consoles have done fine in the past without any form of memory card to store data, PS1,PS2,GC etc.

Most people admit that the PS2 is crap?? ehh did i miss a meeting?? i thought it was the best selling console in the last round (if not of all time)
And yeah when i get my PS3 i wont want to dig out MGS3 and MGS3: substance, GT4, GT4, time splitters, the SOCOM games GTA 3, VC, SA
I mean there are so many people who go out an buy old consoles on these forums or talk about running old 'classics' on.
Also a lot of people when they buy a new console cant afford to buy 5 release titles at 50 quid each, doubling the price of the console, so they get one or 2 and shake it up with some of there favs!

what coul;d be interestnig is if they allow you to save games on your PSP, that would be cool.

ok what i meant to say is a lot of people say their PS2's are gathering dust, meaning that when they get a PS3 they ain't all go suddenely play there old PS2 games if they haven't been using their PS2's for along time because of whatever reasons

How many played PS1 games on the PS2? I don't know of anyone.
I played PS1 games on my PS2. Some of which were released well after the PS2. For example all the old (NES and SNES era) final fantasy games came out for the PS1 well after the PS2 was on the scene. If the PS2 was not backwards compatible, these games may have never been released (PS1 remakes had already been made for Japan, they probably wouldn't have released them here if the current PS couldn't play them).

A lot of people are misconstruing fanboy-ism for people who have an appreciation for technology. It appears that as soon as people praise one console they have to defend themselves from people accusing them of being a fanboy.

As for the hard drive issue I can't see it being a big thing really, not every gamer wants that sort of storage.
