Hello,

This is my first computer i've built and after building it all i've powered it on and the computer turns on for about 2/3 secs then turns off again. It doesn't load long enough to get to a BIOS and i know its working and my 3 fans all start up. I have then taken each component out and ran it with just 1 stick of RAM, processor, motherboard and power supply. Even after doing this is still cuts out after 2secs, i also swapped the RAM stick around but still same problem.

I have included a list of what the spec incase there is a obvious hardware error...

I7 PROCESSOR - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-405-IN
GIGABYTE MOTHERBOARD - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-401-GI
1TB HARD DRIVE - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-257-SE
430W POWER SUPPLY - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-059-CS
OPTICAL DRIVE - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-136-SA

I only have connected 2 plugs into the motherboard, is that right? the large one and the smaller one. And thats all thats connected to the power supply and it still wont work.

Am i missing something here? I really hope its a simple mistake ive made, if you need anymore information please give me a shout as really want to get it working.

Thanks for reading and hopefully helping.
Jake :)

Are there any beeps, long or short and how many?

if possible, test the PSU on another PC.

Try keeping the PSU plugged in for 5 minutes before turning it, to allow the CMOS battery to charge a little, then try again.

Thanks for getting back, there isn't any beeps but i don't think i have a speaker attached to the motherboard and my other computer doesn't have one either so cant snatch one from there.
How would i test the PSU on another computer?

Are you using the stock cooler ? or an aftermarket cooler ?

Is it seated correctly ?

If it boots up for a few seconds and you have the 24 pin and 4/8 pin connected then it doesn't sound like a faulty psu (I could be wrong)

You have connected the cpu fan to the motherboard cpu fan header ?

You could always try the paperclip test to rule out the psu.

Same psu as yours :D

As you can see from this picture it is an aftermarket cooler, this was in my previous comp and worked ok. I have taken it off and there is paste on the processor so there is obviously a connection as i only applied paste to the heat sinks as a test to make sure they did touch. I have checked that the fan is in the correct slot on the motherboard, but i cant believe that its down to a heating issue as its only on for a second or so so i cant believe it would overheat that quickly.

Thanks for the vid i will defo try that, maybe when family are out as i am liable to electrocute something or someone in the process....

Also, un plug everything you don't need, so disconnect hard drives, usb headers & cd roms, if you have the original Intel cpu cooler use that also. If you can, also remove it from the case, just incase you have a short.

Ive removed everything, i havent removed the motherboard yet... might be tomorrow's job if i cant get it working now.

do this, unplug you panel switch wire, bat the one marked power, and see if it turns on.

Also remove the board, you may have a post that's touching the board base, I notice 1 fixing hole, does not have a screw.

I have removed all the front panel plugs and still doesnt load. Yes your right there is one screw hole without anything in as there isnt a whole for it on the case. would this affect the computer booting? There is already 6 screws holding it in.

"I have removed all the front panel plugs and still doesnt load. " still the same or any different?

as for the screws it shouldn't matter but grounding can be weird

No same thing, loads for about 2 secs then off, i have just done the paperclip test on the PSU and it works so thats no faulty. And i have checked and double checked the front panels

Ok yes i do have 2 and even wiht just one or 2 same thing happens, and i have just changed the RAM with 2 sticks which 100% work and still same thing, boots for about 2 seconds then off again. Dont know if this is linked but the power button on the case doesnt work.

Try shorting the power jumpers with a screwdriver

How do you know the switch doesn't work, surely you haven't had a chance to get to that point to test it as it powers on instantly?

EDIT: What wazza suggested would also work

Power jumpers? where are they located? And it does turn on as soon as i put the plug in and swtich it to on on the PSU but after it shuts down if i press the power button nothiing, but if i shot the CMOS then it powers up.
