Why not just kill all animals for eating on birth then if there is no point to prolonging their life? Or are there occasions where you'd want an animal to grow up to be better food?
They still come from chickens kept in captivity just to provide food for us, which can't be very nice for them. So if you're a proper animal lover you should want them to be roaming around... wherever chickens like to be. I have no idea where that is, to be honest.
It depends where you get your eggs from, free range are usually the best you'll get in most supermarkets, barnyard raised aren't as good but still significantly better than battery farmed. Or keep your own chickens if you have space and can abide them to be sure of the quality of eggs and the quality of life for the hens. Bear in mind however they are occasionally noisy and almost invariably stupid in my experience, that said they are quite amiable things for most of the time.

Yes, you'd kill all animals for eating at birth? Bit of a poor meal I'd have thought. It seems the chicken in the OP might be young and therefore not ideal for eating at present when leaving it for a while and feeding it up could make for a better meal.
The whole point is academic given the dietary choices of Vegetarian but nevermind.
