Help: Kittens!

How are things going Stelly??

Any update on the ickle fir balls :D

Hey,

Sorry been mad busy in work...

Okay well the kittens are doing well... I have closed up the garage so that the mother and kittens cannot get out in readiness for when the Kittens start to venture out of the box.

Mum is not impressed with the new setup but she is accepting it, seems to be spending more time out of the box that has the kittens in and sitting in a corner that she seems to like a lot... good thing is that she has taken to the litter tray (and I didn't realise how much cat poops smells a lot more than dog poop)

Since the mother is out of the box more now I can get more of a look at the kittens and the are right fatties at the moment, I thought that the mother was not feeding them as she was out of the box every time that I went in but I have been going in at about 10pm to give them a feed and she has been in the box both times.

The are starting to try and stand as I can hear them on the cardboard digging their claws in trying to get up right but then a small thud as they fail at that task...

I may try and get some pics of them tonight if the mother is out of the box, but we did have a little drama the other night, the next door neighbour had decided without informing me that they were putting a new fence up and there was a lot of noise that the mother did not approve of and looked a little stressed.

Anyway I think that it is it for now :)

Aawwww that's adorable :D

Yeah, cat poo smells a hell of a lot worse than dog poo - We have a damn smelly cat.
Seems like she's definitely adopted you. :P

If you want to improve the smell of her poos and the kittens poos when they eventually start using the litter tray then getting them on to raw food or if you don't have the time for this then Natural Instincts is perfect and then their poos will smell far better.

The smell is because you are feeding them the equivilant of junk food, ie whiskas, felix etc.

I would also now that the mother is ok with the litter box get them in the house so she can start to get used to being a house cat.

We feed purina one light and our litter tray don't smell.

I scoop it and flush it down toilet every night.

^ Please do not do this :)

The toxins in kitteh pooh are not fully removed and subsequently when this water is put back into the environment it damages wildlife (fish etc)

It was mentioned in the 'Kitty Cats' thread but I cant find the post atm

E: a quick google shows conflicting arguments. The Americans say don't do this cause any Toxoplasma eggs in the poo are not always killed/ dealt with during water treatment, these are then passed onto wildlife which wouldnt normally come into contact with it - they keep mentioning sea otters. Where as in the UK results it seems that most think its ok...To be on the safe side I would wrap and bin, but I am lucky cause Snoopy hasnt used her tray in months

So at the moment I'm bagging and binning it, should I be doing this? yay or nay? I don't see the difference as it either:

1. Goes in the bin, then to the tip
2. Goes in the loo, then to treatment facility

Views please? :)

Most views online are to bag and bin...even using dog poo bags if you have them/ can get them as they break down...

Crickey! In the US they say not to bag and bin unless your bin men can handle hazardous materials

When mine were still popping inside, I was flushing it down the loo. Sorry but my bins only get collected once a fortnight and there was no way that I was letting it build up in my bin.

I asked the vet and they said as long as you don't have loads of cats it's fine.

There does seem to be conflicting advice though.

Hey guys,

Well I managed to get another picture this morning...

It seems to be taking forever for them to open their eyes and seem to have been in this state for ages... maybe its just me. They are 2 weeks old this Friday night and I'm guessing that I'm just being really impatient.

Am I right in thinking that they should be between 2 and 3 weeks before they start walking around and taking solid food?

Came in this morning to a right mess with the litter tray it was like the mother is trying everything to get every like bit out of the tray and onto the floor... I'm going to have a good tidy tonight but couldn't this morning.

I'm just so glad that they all seem to be alive *touches wood* they are right fatties which seems to mean that they are feeding well... one thing I will say though is I have changed the food a little... in the morning I'm giving the mother a mix of wet and dry normal food and then dry kitten food mixed with wet at night.

This is a fantastic thread, keep the updates coming :)!
One thing I would say, and I'm no expert, is about feeding them dry food. It really isn't very good for cats, and I've just converted mine from dry to wet food.
An article about the dangers of dry cat food.

Opening their eyes and tentatively walking around - yes. Cute little balls of fluff bumping into things and falling over.

They won't be taking solid food for a good while yet though. They may start around 6 weeks, but they won't be properly weened until 8-10 weeks.

This is true, I'm in the process of converting mine to wet.

I've also heard that dry and wet shouldn't be given in the same meal as they metabolise it differently. Just something to think about.

Bad food contributes to smelly poos too. So can parasites etc which she is very likely to have.

Alright mate, sorry not been online V much recently things have been a bit mental at my end.

Glad things seem to be going well! I will try and jump online tonight for a catch up and I can send you some links about what to expect in terms of progress from the kittens etc.

Has the mum settled anymore with you around or is she still V wary of you?

Also if the mother is still intent on emptying the litter tray you may want to get a covered one and save the open one for when the kittens will start to use it. Covered litter trays are a god send lol.

Since I'm going to be adopting one of these kitty's off Stelly providing all goes well, It's great to be able to seem them grow over the weeks.

I might look into that then, what is a good wet food??

Don't worry about it mate :)

Mother is still very very wary of me... she will sit in her corner every time that I come is as she feels safe there... she is doing the whole squinting and looking away from me but still I don't think we are near ready to get too close :)

Can you provide me with a link? Will go and have a look this weekend, but anything online so I have an idea would be great :)
