Help: Kittens!

You may find stelly that they wont hang about long.

cats usually find a quite place like this and move them on a few days later.

we had a family under our stairs in an old coal cellar. days later she packed up with the kittens and moved on.

This is a lovely story Stelly, glad you're looking after them and the mother is starting to trust you. Both our 2 stray cats adopted us, one of them befriended my dad at work and the other turned up on our door about 4 months old and we've had her 8 or so years now, we had no choice but to keep her. :D

I'm assuming that was meant as a joke? But....not sure of the punchline.

nope, they now generally just try to prosecute people, and most of the animals they "rescue" get put down.

there was some old lady who had i think 11 cats, rspca was informed she wasn't looking after them properly, in the past they would have helped her given her information and taught her how to look after them and last resort re home some or all of them.

now they just went in removed all the cats, laid charges against her and put 9 of the 11 down.

caused some of their workers to resign because they felt the rspca was no longer what it used to be.

Good for you. Now all you need to worry about is giving the mother food, cat food will be fine, and water. She''ll take care of the rest.

You'll need to get the CPL involved as at about 6-8 months they'll be ready to be rehomed. They'll be fine if brought up from young, otherwise they'lll be very wary of humans like their mum. They'll also need spaying as they can become pregnant at that age and you don't want a population explosion on your hands. Mum will be probably be neutered and released as she'll probably be feral or at least very difficult to rehome, unless used to humans.

Is she stray or is she feral? The CPL would know. Strays can usually be rehomed, ferals, very unlikely she'll just be left to get on with it, tough as it sounds.

Sorry she is feral actually not stray.

She has been with the Kittens all day. I cooked some cheap chicken legs and going to give her one of them a day (off the bone) and buscuits twice a day. I can see the Kittens and they are moving so I'm a little more happy as she is with them.

She is not moving from the kittens when I come in which is fantastic :)

That's it now, it's official. You have been adopted.

Just want to make sure you're not giving them cooked chicken INCLUDING bone?

Cooked chicken bones shattered and can cause terrible damage when animals eat them :(

Raw chicken is fine, my cats get the fatty scraps of chicken breast and love it! :p

Also, good job! :D

nah without bones, its the same for dogs and cats, I have a rotty already and know not to give them chicken bones :)

He says off the bone in his post .

Hey guys,

Just went to see her today before going to work... she looks good all 4 kittens are kicking around...

I'm wondering if I should pen the kittens in? What do you guys suggest the next stage should be? I'm thinking about domesticating them and giving them to a good home but I'm not sure how to go around it? Should I get them off the mother when they are on solids? I'm not sure what to do in this situation?

Here is a pic of the mother I was able to manage to get:

The black blobs at the top of the cats head is a couple of the kittens, the other two you cannot see :)

Thanks,

Stelly

They won't be able to wander about just yet :)

They need to stay with mum at least 8 weeks, even better 10 - 12 weeks, she won't be feeding them still then, but she'll be helping them develop into well formed individuals :)

I think it's 6 weeks onwards they can start weaning onto kitten food. You can also buy cat milk which has extra calories in for them.

If you ring a local rescue branch, they'll be able to give you step by step stuff I'm sure :)

Hey Guys,

Just got in contact with the CPL (some weird hold music of cats meowing and purring) anyway....

They old me to start interacting after 2 - 3 weeks and at that time think about putting out wet kitten food. They gave some really good advice and some contact numbers of people to contact if I need a trap to get the mother done.

I'm still thinking about making a pen to keep them safe and secure and ensure that they do not wonder off... what do you think?

They also recommended maybe only getting Kitten milk if the mother stops feeding them..

Talk about being dumped in the middle of things!

Just leave them to it, I don't think the disruption will be worth it and it may not go down too well either. The kittens won't wander far and if they do the mother will go and fetch them back anyway.

Honestly Stelly if you aren't wanting or can't take care of the kittens, and they will be a handful, phone the CPL people back up and tell them this. I foster for them and they will take them if you say you can't cope. It's probably a good idea as they have experienced people who have bought up kittens before ready for homing. Another fosterer has a bunch of kittens at the moment who have just been born so they know what there doing.

There's no shame in saying you can't or don't want to take care of them mate.

Hey,

I'm up for doing it. If the mother leaves them I will call CPL back as I don't have the time to constantly feed them.

The only thing that I'm worried about is at 3 - 4 weeks them leaving the garage and either getting lost or getting run over by me or by leaving the garden... that is why I was thinking about creating a pen sometime next week to ensure that the kittens are safe?

AFK, I would like to contact you to see if I can get some advice about stuff :)

Cheers,

Stelly
