Right then! Its time i got a tidy car, since i was seventeen i have been running around in bangers and my current one is on its way out (going through about 2 and half gallons of water a week!:o)

Im still stuck with the decision to either go petrol or diesel, So would like some suggestions for both. Im quite fond of a medium sized car like an Audi A3, I despise golfs and the ford focus so neither of those please. In a petrol i want something sporty and quick, I have been looking at Audi S3's and Seat leon cupra R's. I pretty much want the same in a diesel (sporty looks and quick) but have only been looking at Audi A3's 2.0 TDI.

Prefer a 3 door
Dont want something OTT boy racerish
Really dislike smaller sized cars (corsa etc)

Insurance isnt a problem

Budget is around £7000 but the lower the better :p

Leon FR TDI?

How important is running cost to you, as thats the key thing when choosing petrol/diesel? Do you like the way diesels drive?

You're looking at something along the following lines if you want a hatchback.

Focus, Golf, Fabia, Leon, A3, Mazda3, Mondeo, 1 Series?

Of course you don't want a Focus/Golf so scratch them off the list.

Any of the above, or their diesel variants. Best bet is to go down to your dealerships and have a look. Just see what you like the look of, both inside and outside. Then you can go from there.

I honestly dont think you want a Leon Cupra R or an Audi S3. These are expensive cars to run, because they are performance cars. You may feel that you want to pay this price to benefit from the driving experience they offer, but if you do, then you wouldn't even be considering a diesel because it's just a different type of car.

An A3 2.0 TDI will be newer, more modern, more economical and slower - an S3 is the previous generation car, is noticeably quicker yet dated on the inside, and costs loads more to run.

What exactly do you want from a car? What do you consider quick?

My 'gut feeling' is that an S3 or Cupra R is too much for you and you personally would be better off with a normal A3.

Especially if, by the sounds of it, you dont have piles of cash to splash around.

Whats your current car as well? Performance is all relative...

Running costs are slightly important and thats where my decision get's stuck between a desiel and a petrol, quite a few years ago i had a mk3 astra 1.4i multipoint was a rapid little thing for its size, loved the way it drove. When it died i had a Audi 80 1.9tdi horrid to drive, big and ugly, Since then had a small Nova (again horrible little car) and my current Car which a Rover 218 SL (diesel)

Cars i have driven: Mates scooby, nice car, fast but not my cup of tea, Mates focus 170 ST again nice to drive but iv never liked the looks on a focus and Honda Civic Type R Nice car fast but out of my price range.

My parents have an Audi A4 2.0 diesel with DSG box really nice to drive its quick but this car is tad big for me.

Modern deisels are a world away from the older cars you listed.

If you like the Leon, the FR TDI isnt a bad shout. I've not driven one but have driven a Golf GT TDI 150 and they really do shift quite nicely and will do really good mpg too.

You dont need an Audi S3. Get a 2.0 TDI or a 2.0 FSI current shape one.

Tricky within 7k maybe?

7k seems to be the starting point for those from what I can see

best be for your money top spec wise is a Seat Toledo V5 (170), has leathers, satnav, electric seats, electric windows, climate control the lot really. and you can get 1 for around 3K.

or hatchback wise
a MK5 Golf GT TDI or maybe a Toyota Corolla

Saving money's one thing, and the Toledo is a really good car, but he could buy 2 left over (and a corolla) for his budget :)

8.3s to 60 isn't the worst.

Or is it a diesel thing?

Its just a diesel thing I think. It will definitely fly compared to an old rover diesel

The rover has been kept due to necessity of getting from A to B. Its a big pile of crap, far too slow and its old but hey it was given too me.

it doesnt matter how much the Toledo costs cause it the best for the cheapest. Top spec and will beat most cars spec wise for 7k

0-62 doesnt matter cause how many times do you actually do that. mostly you do 30-40 or 30-50 or 40-70 so the more torque you have the quicker you'll get to that speed
