Help me Install Windows 7? CD/DVD device driver is missing

Since I installed Win 7 on my Acer Laptop it won't recognize the internal DVD, it won't even accept an external USB drive :(

Delete the filters mate, just the upper filters.

yes - is that what I should be doing?

LOL no, not that at all.

Hellsmk2 gave a great link. Not tried it myself but others have and its good.

I myself use Ubuntu Linux to create booting USB Flash drives and it simply converts a USB Flash disk from a CD or DVD and its been flawless for me... Tad bigger download than Hellsmk2's link I feel.

But simply copying the files over will not work at all.

I must have had corrupt files like bootsect.exe.mui in the ISO, because I redownloaded the ISO last night and copied the files over dragging and dropping and this time it worked flawlessly!

Yes, thats all very well, but you are still wasting your time.

Simply copying files from a DVD to a Flash Drive wont make the flashdrive bootable and you wont be able to install Windows from it.

You need to use some utility ( 2 options have already been offered to you ) and these will give you what you want.

I apologise, I'm not making myself clear. I've already followed those steps and I've made the USB drive bootable, my issue was copying the files which is now resolved from downloading a new image.

Ah, I had a sneaky that something was going awol in the conversation somewhere?

In Ubuntu there is a really sweet tool that converts any CD or DVD into a flash disk equivalent... I have tried every version of Linux and Windows I have and it works flawlessly every time.

The one O/S I would have loved to get it to work on however is / was OS2 Warp however the boot sequence on that requires 4 Floppies and a CD.. Utterly stupid, but then thats the same as Win2K was when I first tried it.

Thought I would bring this up again!

Its driving me insane! Have a Acer laptop and supposidly the only way I can get this working is by using a external dvd drive?

What on earth is going on!!!

If you have a iso of windows 7 just use "Windows7-USB-DVD-tool.exe" from microsoft to install from usb stick it will do all the work for you.

Edit: ops sorry i see marmalade has already mentioned this :)

Don't have a usb stick! As never any need to use one, looks like am going to have to buy one.

Unlucky for the normal users.

I would have thought that these days, owning a USB stick IS the NORMAL USERS!

I think perhaps you are the only person I know to NOT have one?

Yes because the normal user, I.E my mum, sister etc. Would try to install not be able to then think, o yes I will get a usb stick make it bootable and install from there

I will pick one up at the weekend though, major pain in the behind though.

Thanks guys.

Hahaha... You didnt just give me the RollEyes on a statement like that did you?

Im really lost for words!

No, the average user i.e your mum would never be trying to install it in the first place, and if she did, and failed the first time, then they would be calling on someone ( else! ) who knows what they are doing such as a shop.

The mere idea of using a USB stick for installing windows would never have even cropped up in her head and it would never have cropped up in over 99.9% of anyone else's head either... Whether they already had a stick or not!

****** hell.

People use a USB stick to copy files over to friends or colleagues computers you fool. Since most files these days wont fit onto a floppy, and since burning CD or DVD is often too much hassle and expense, the USB stick has taken over as the single best thing for any user to have.

So dont give me the roll eyes when your statement makes you look completely idiotic.

Im going mad here!!!

Made the USB bootable, put all the files on it. Great it boots from USB, no same friking error!! What on gods earth is going on? Is it even possible?

With the files, did you extract them from an ISO, or copy from your disc?

Burning too quickly to a poor disc can create this error...

You made the USB bootable and then you put all the files onto it?
Once again, thats NOT how you do it.

you have been told several times what to do.

Since somehting is clearly going amiss, then why dont you just send me your Flah drive and I will convert it for you?

---------

Alternatively, another option that sometimes works, is to start the install in another PC?

Put the Drive into a PC that worked for you, then, once its done the first stage of the install, put the HD back into this offending PC and it should have by-passed the nasty DVD bit???? - Just a though.

According to the guides I have read and also by trial and error, it acctually is. After making the USB bootable.

Plus its a Laptop, still under warrenty. Not really wanting to spend cash on a HDD.

Infact you are the first person I have ever wanted to add to my ignore list.

It ended up it was a dodgy ISO, 4th time downloading it and it worked. :D

Now, eventually, running windows 7 :)

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

You're wrong.

No need to be condescending, even if you think you are right!

Clearly says to mark the usb as bootable, then copy the files across..

There are many ways to do it, using various tools or doing it manually.

I was not being condencending.

Something was going wrong, he himself says that he is going mad, so I was merely offering to do it for him.

Why is that condencending?

Yes I know you can, I use ISO Images and USB Flash drives to install Windows and Linux all the time, I was only stating that with teh two option that you were given to try, you didnt seem to be giving them a go, and neither of them were saying to make the disk bootable and copy files because both options did everything for you.

Plus its a Laptop, still under warrenty. Not really wanting to spend cash on a HDD.

No sorry, I never said that.
I meant that you can take the HD out of this, and put it into another PC to start off the installation.
That way you will at least get a better idea as to why it fails ( if it still fails )

Infact you are the first person I have ever wanted to add to my ignore list.

Why? Over this? How interesting. Makes me wonder really. Sure, I was wrong, but I was only trying to help... And you add me to your ignore list?
Takes all sorts I suppose?

Ok, so good news in the end
Im a little concerned that you have to download for a 4th time.

Now, eventually, running windows 7 :)

So, after all of this, is it a legal copy?
