I have been having a debate at work over;

If actions speak louder than words and a picture paints a 1000 words. What does a .gif do?

We have come to roughly a 50/50 split over thinking a gif is 1000 loud words or 1000 quiet words. So I thought to myself I shall ask the brains of OcUK :D

Personally, I think it would be 1000 quiet words as a picture = 1000 words but a gif moves or has 'action'. As actions speak louder than words then the action of the gif must be louder than the 1000 words it paints as a picture. Therefore a gif is a 1000 quiet words.

If possible can a poll be added;
A 1000 quiet words
A 1000 loud words
U WOT M8!

I don't see the need for 1000 loud words, it could be a silent action(in real time) even though it speaks 'louder' than words. The saying is a slight oxymoron anyway. I would go with a silent action which speaks somewhat more emotively than a static picture, depending on who's interpreting it of course.

Has gif become synonymous for animated gif? Have we forgotten the non-animated gif.

I'm not sure silence or animation adds much to the word meh...

Can we add meh to the poll

Question.... If an action speaks louder than words and a picture paints a 1000 words, how the blummin hell did you get 1000 quiet words? surely because its a picture as well as an action within that picture you'd end up with a 1000 loud words... 1000 quiet words just doesn't make sense at all to me.

Or what about the fact that a gif is actually a video turned into a picture meaning its actually 100s of pictures sometimes even being 1000s of pictures which are all actions so surely you'd in reality end up with 100,000s of loud words or even in fact millions of loud words?

In conclusion i vote : U WOT M8

You sure this was an actual real debate in your workplace, and not just you sitting on the bog talking to ourself pretending to have friends?! :p

Ok so a picture says 1000 words and a gif is a set of images there's no action just a series of images depicting things thus I propose another option;

P = Fx1000

So Power of a gif is equal to number of frames multiplied by one thousand.
