Help me to...

One of my friends bought a box of toothpicks and twiddled them around his fingers and chewed on them and it helped him quit. Not sure it works for everyone but just a suggestion

Going by £10 average, that's £3650 a year. Which is about £300 a month, which you could be spending on bills, food, luxuries.

Better health if you exercise during the process of stopping, it's winwin really.

Why do people start? Whats the thought process? Are they all just weak minded?

'Ooh that fag smoke smells nice, I'd love to stick that into my mouth'

In terms of appeal it must be on a par with being addicted to eating dog dirt. I appreciate its very addictive but seriously, how dim do you need to be to think 'Yea, that sounds good, I'll give that a go'

My old man gave up 3 years ago and he swears by the nicorette "blaster" that you suck on. It has a very small amount of nicotine in it but he said it was more of the habit of sucking on something that he found helped him quite.

Peer pressure in a lot of cases I would have thought. Or when drunk a lot of people lose their common sense and so probably think it is a good idea to have a cigarette. The only cig I have ever had was when I was very drunk and didn't really know what I was doing, wouldn't ever have one again though, taste nasty.

I started smoking weed and that led to cigarettes. Here I am 16 years later and I still smoke, although not every day and generally less than 5 a day.

As for people coming out with the whole 'it stinks, it kills you, it kills those around you and it's expensive' argument; believe it or not, but smokers already know this so although they are all very valid points please don't expect a road to damascus moment when you remind us.

I smoke because I'm addicted to nicotine, but I'm growing out of it. Like an alcoholic, I don't think I'll ever really quit, I think I'll always be a smoker, just one that chooses not to smoke that day.

Good luck $quiff

£10 a day is about the amount you can stick in an ISA per year isn't it?

Do that! It's almost free savings! Just set up an ISA and pass it your cig money, you'll be used to living without it, and you'll be rewarded by a bunch of tax-free interest (admittedly lower now than it was a few days ago, but still)!

Watching them grow will probably help :)

Not so much words of advice, but hopefully a deterrent. Both my parents used to smoke, luckily my dad managed to give up when I was around 10, after 3 failed attempts (I'm really proud of him). My mum however, still smokes, has no intention of giving up whatsoever. As a child, and even now in my 20's, it absolutely terrifies me that one day she's going to die. I literally used to cry myself to sleep thinking that I might lose my mum just because she 'fancied a fag'. Its just heartbreaking.

I don't know if you have kids, or plan to, but just think about that next time you feel the urge to light up...:(
