Help problem solving PC that won't boot please

I would have thought that when running furmark the PSU was under much more load than startup, is that not the case then?
The initial boost to power a PC is significant, and the same principle would apply to all other possible components under suspicion when stressed - motherboard/CPU and even GPU. All have run seamlessly until the next reboot :/
 
If I have to get a new mobo, I would go for mobo and cpu as I see ocuk don't do 2011 anymore. I will have a rethink as well as I don't play games on the PC anymore, long story but I had to give up about 18 months ago.
We could try a CPU re-seat - you've come this far?

Check motherboard pins etc..
 
We don't have to but without another PSU or GFX card we've reached a dead end :/

I am taking a short break before tackling the cpu. Just having a look at mobo/cpu combinations and I realize I have no idea what I want or need, the first time since I built my first PC in 1993 :)

Sorry bud, i realise this is a PITA. If i had to guess i would pick the motherboard but even with the quality of your PSU it's still a strong contender.

You, unfortunately, have one of those ambiguous (b8stard) issues that requires spare components to isolate the problem.
 
Cooler = alpenfohn matterhorn B&W edition rev C according to the installation leaflet I have just found.
Once the fan is off it's just a single bracket across the center - 2 screws?

We can test with the fan unattached once the heatsink is reattached - for testing/trying to get into the BIOS
 
You were right about the heatsink, I think its the fan clips that caused problems way back when I installed it, one of those where three hands would be useful :)
The cpu pins all look straight and it dropped back in easily. I just out the heatsink back with no fan. No change.

Is there any signs of life from PSU at all? Could you describe what's happening as you short the pins?

Or buy a new mobo/cpu (with on board graphics too) combination as it is more likely a mobo issue, if that still does't work, buy a PSU.

I need to get a PC up and running. I managed to catch up with everything by end of day Sat, but I can't do much on this 7 year old laptop I am using at the moment. Although I don't want to, I would rather throw money at this and sort it out.

You could use a voltage meter (or dedicated PSU tester) to test the PSU - but this gives no indication if it's OK under load.

Cheapest/safest option is to buy a PSU and if it doesn't work return it under the DSA - you would be buying it in good faith as you would keep it if it fixed your problem.

Then it's down to the MB and CPU (assuming GFX card is OK) - the odds favour the motherboard and second hand x99 are probably nuts. You could sell the CPU - with a warning that you will accept a return if it proves to be faulty (although this would invite abuse - perhaps sell it locally).

What is your primary use for the desktop - as Ryzen may be an option, certainly cheaper with present prices.
 
May I ask you a couple of questions here please? I will post in the appropriate place if preferred.
1. How do I compare CPU power, to ensure I get something of similar or better than I have now?
2. What is onboard graphics like these days? Can I run 4k and occasional 4k video edit, and a lot of photo editting?
If I am replacing things, given I don't play games anymore, I would like to simplify life, maybe no graphics card and a smaller simpler CPU cooler.
 
Primary use now is Microsoft Office. Heaviest use is some occasional 4K video editing, a lot of full size photo editing where I have got used to instant response no matter what I do.
