Help! Problems with new computer.

To cut a long story short, I ordered a desktop, the components of which I chose myself, and had them all put together. I also got a new monitor too. So I connect the PC/monitor up as they should be, and switch it all on. PC is on, monitor is on, but I have no picture and the monitor doesn't recognise the input. After a few attempts and trying a few alternatives, I called the company's technical support and was advised to remove the motherboard's BIOS battery and then reinsert it after about 15 minutes. I tried that method twice and still no luck.

Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be and more important, how I can fix it? I can give additional info on the spec - I just simply didn't want to write it all down as I have no idea what's relevant.

Who put them all together? The company you ordered the parts from? or yourself? If it was the company then they should sort it.

The company put it together. I don't really want to have to send it back now that I've finally got though.

The monitor has a D-sub cable so I connected it to the VGA port on the desktop. My first thoughts were that I'd need to connect it via DVI or even HDMI perhaps...

When you say the PC turns on, if speakers are attached can you hear windows loading up? (its chiming noise it makes) or do the fans just start spinning and the light come on?

I kept switching the channel between D-sub and DVI, but it made no difference. Windows is yet to be installed - I have the disc ready to do so, but can't without any picture. There's a kind of beep when the computer is switched on, as well as the LED light turning on and the fans starting up.

What are the specs of the system, does this use a external card or internal / onboard gpu.

Unfortunately I don't have a second monitor. I tried putting my laptop through the monitor, but it has a history of not recognising monitors/beamers anyway.

It makes one single short beep.

The spec:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-880GMA-UD2H, AMD 880G, AM3 mATX
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Box, Sockel AM3
GPU: XFX RADEON HD 6850 775M 1GB DDR5 DP HDMI DUAL DVI PCI-E
PSU: XFX PRO750W Core Edition Full Wired Power Supply
RAM: 4GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3-1333 CL9

I think they're the only necesary components. Oh and the monitor is the BenQ G2420HDBL.

Connected the monitor to the 6850, with this installed the motherboard gpu probably would be disabled.

Did you not get one of these below with the system:

The other option is to remove the card from the machine and use the onboard gpu.

Yeah, it worked. Thanks a lot! Now, I'm trying to install Windows 7, but have hit a brick wall. They're asking me to pick the driver that it can be installed onto (i.e. the harddrive), but I can't find it. It's a WD 1.5TB one but it didn't come with an installation CD...
