Help settle a drumming argument

Agreed.
We've asked Neon many times to bring something to the table and he won't.
Its very hard to respect somebody when they are being arrogant but they are telling us how great they are and we haven't heard them.

well im not being funny but from someone who has met me in real life to an internet forum view, is quite a big step. i will post drum tracks etc for you. when the studio is finished.

but then again i will probably get slated on how you think my style or something is rubbish.

You will never hear me **** off any up & coming musician on these forums since most people are better than me in their first two months.

I've heard him. He's good.

Just a little heads up but on BBC2 very shortly on Let me Entertain You there is a drummer doing a drum solo. This is the lad who wanted an audition with us.

i think if i saw him doing some proper drumming instead of doing stuff for a studio audience it would be a lot better!
with £2,000 he can sure add a few things to his already huge kit (i assume it was his own)

Scroll down to his videos on his site - http://www.myspace.com/joeblanks
He even plays with a Big Band.

He's right full of himself but in a jokey way.

If that Let Me Entertain You performance is anything to go by, then I can't say he's anything special.

Especially that mozambique groove, which was just the basic pattern that everyone learns when they do that, without any variations.
The big band video was a bit flat. It didn't really have much feel behind it at all.

He seems to be a player that values chops over feel.
Not to say that his chops are bad, however, but it often seems like he's playing above his level of skill, making sloppy mistakes, and trying to impress with chops alone.

Plus I don't like his style.

Theres something in that.

Our drummers so far -
Gary - no computer
Paul - no Computer
Ivan - no computer
Tim - computer but rarely used it
Paul - no computer
Cliff - no computer

Daley Thompsons Decathlon for the ZX Spectrum obviously has a lot to answer for.

But all the old people in the audience loved him and won him £2000 so he can't be that bad :D
He's only 16, self taught and has got a footing on the ladder so I wish him luck.

I wouldn't say he's bad, but admittedly, the average non-musician would see his shoowmanship as good playing.

While he's a great entertainer, I woulnd't call him a good drummer.

But then again, most people would find technical drumming boring.

Do you think these two clips are boring (and probably the most technical you can get ;))?

Not having a go at previous poster just getting an opinion :)

Tom
DCI people are different, Marching drumming is insane for technicality.

I was referring more to odd-meter drumming when I said technical though, more along the lines of Bobby Jarzombek, Chris Pennie, Virgil Donati, people that are right up there as technical players (some of the few who can bust out polyrhythmic phrases over complex foot ostinatos).
Technically inspiring, but boring to listen to.
