Here we go again..

is there actually anything we can do to stop costs rising? its getting utterly ridiculous now when the americans are only paying around 35/38p a litre and we are paying 1.10!

An American litre is different to a British litre. They use a lower quality fuel too.

Mainland Europe comes across as more expensive then over here, Brown has other ideas.

you will also find that they don't user lower quality fuel either. Their pump octane numbers are usually RON+MON/2, ours is just RON. Also afaik they pay siginificantly more than 38p/litre nowadays.

Eventually, the cost of petrol will be high enough to make taking the bus an attractive/affordable option...
I don't think so cos the raising cost of diesel goes to transport too so what's the point of that if the transport is already expensive? I can understand if a reduced fuel tax is applied for public transport making it more attractive but since the government is useless with our money, I don't see it happening anyway.

The thing is that if you buy a diesel only to save some money and about 1 or two year later, it is already more expensive than it was running a petrol car 1/2 years earlier so really, what's the point of buying a diesel?!

Both diesel and petrol are expensive, no matter which way you're looking from. Go for transport but then, it would be more expensive as well. A price raise in a bus or train ticket multiply by 4 for a family of four, making the transport much more expensive!

Whatever the way, we're still much better off with cars as it saves our valuable time such as working/social hours. Let's say if you save an hour travel to work by using a car instead of bus and you can use that hour for work to earn say £10 per hour, it's no brainer which one to go for!

Government is ******* useless!

They pay $3 for a US Gallon of fuel. This is 3.78 litres. This works out as 79 cents a litre, which at the current exchange rate is 40 pence per litre.

Therefore, the reason for our high prices for fuel are infact taxation levels and not high oil prices.

A barrel of oil contains 159 litres. Therefore, at $100 a barrel (Which it no longer costs, btw), raw crude is 62 cents a litre. This works out to be just 31 pence.

So, in theory then, even if oil prices doubled to $200 a barrel which they almost certainly will at some point in the future, a litre of raw crude would still cost only 62 pence and we could expect a fuel price rise purely due to oil price increases of about 30p a litre..

What makes matters ever worse for us is the level of tax we have to pay on our money before we even get chance to spend it on fuel.

Last time i checked friends in Dubai are paying 20p per litre :(

well we are getting scarily close to a chaos point aren't we?? and that's a good thing because in such times of crises we see real action occur.

None of this "don't buy fuel here" rubbish that will never work... eventually fuel will get to a point where people just can't afford to buy it then the REAL chaos will begin - the government will have to act and realise they have pushes us all too far....

I can see that happening soon maybe 5 years ?

look at the cars most of up younger people on here have though. Even 15 years ago this was unheard of. Motoring is cheaper than ever.

Over £50 a fillup here too - not looking forward to Februarys travelling :(

was 108.9 last time I filled up....daren't think what it is now :(
