Has anybody had trucks who think they can police the road by hogging both lanes when there is a merge in turn further down the road? Do they not know that the rules are to drive up to it and MERGE IN TURN???:o

I've seen car drivers do it plenty of times. It is pretty annoying to see every prat who thinks his journey is more important go haring past and then trying to get in further up.

Fine by me.

What causing the traffic jam to be even longer, if people merge in turn the traffic caused will be reduced and you will get through much quicker!

From my experience they tend to do it quite near the converging lanes, where people have had plenty of time/notice to get into the correct lane. Like I say, no problems from me.

Must be so annoying to see people use Merge In Turn properly.

It's actually the utter moronic ******* who don't drive right up to the roadworks who are the annoying idiots.

That's what you're supposed to do.

It should be a case of there are two queues of equal length, one from each lane feeding into the single carriageway at a time.

It's idiots like you that cause traffic buildups. I drove 1 mile ! past some traffic at standstill a couple of days ago because no-one was following the rules of the road. That queue could be half the length and would then not have backed up onto the roundabout and blocking the whole roundabout and the roads feeding onto that too.

^^This^^

Some people need to get a clue!

What about those moronic ****** that drive right up to the roadworks even if there is a solid line of cars to their left hand side yet still feel it nescessary to force their way in at the very end

Again, they shouldn't have to force their way in, each driver on the inside lane should let the traffic through. They have a choice of lane too, and should take the shortest. That way every driver would get through in the quickest time possible, no longer than one single que would take.

Seriously... get a clue.

Then proceed to use it.

I agree.

Merge-in-turn is one of those things you either "get" or don't. But if you don't get it, just accept that what those are doing who use it is perfectly legitimate. It's not theirs or the system's fault that you don't understand it.

It's odd because generally the British aren't too bad at using merge-in-turn for joining motorways. But as soon as the slightest resemblence of a "queue" forms then the whole mindset just goes out the window and becomes "every man for himself!".

Would you care to explain why you think people should not use the correct, merge-in-turn rules set out in the highway code? Think about it to yourself and if you please then explain to everyone here if you have a reason that makes sense.

I'll supply an anecdote about the queueing mentality here. The following incorporates only 1 place where merge in turn was necessary.

A couple of years ago the M8 was closed for most of the day due to diesel spillages. I took the back roads to get to work and finally reached a 2 lane road (in each direction) with only this road and 4 roundabout between me and work. The left lane was stationary for about 3 miles. All roundabouts had 2 lanes on and 2 lanes off. The right lane had me and about a dozen other people in it who weren't afraid to "skip the queue". I reckon I saved myself 30-60 minutes on that journey because I knew the highway code. The roundabouts I passed were also blocked at the other entrances due to people not being able to get where they wanted to go.

It's one of those rare things that's actually designed to make people's lives easier but because a large section of people don't understand it, the people that do are labelled cocks.

Just a little story of a trip on the A1 recently. There were signs on roadworks 1 mile ahead indicating that the nearside lane was closed, some people immediately pulled into the right lane (dual carriageway at this point). 800 yard signs with the blocked lane and right lane showing as open, this starts the next round of people moving into the right lane.

At this time the right lane is congested and is much slower than the left as I was the only person in that lane, as usual I was the only one that wanted to merge in turn. In front of me someone in a tired Mondeo thought it good practice to change into the left lane maintaining the speed of the right, this caused me to have to make a choice, emergency stop or use the hard shoulder to drive passed, I chose the hard shoulder and carried on my merry way to the roadworks to merge in turn.

The 200 yard sign comes and goes, then nothing, there is still a right lane full of vehicles and a left empty besides me and no roadworks, no closure of the left lane just a queue of cars.

To all those who don't merge in turn, if you went to the supermarket and got to the checkouts to find one till with 30 people waiting in line and another with just 2 I'm assuming you'd just join the massive queue, clogging up a couple of aisles and giving nasty looks to anyone who dared to use the other one?
