Hiking, backpacking, trekking, mountaineering...

never been but report back, been looking at doing alps or Picos de Europa but the ferries are silly price to Santander.

We flew to PdE for a week in 2014 (flew into Bilbao IIRC). Found a good place just outside Potes

This was the view from our balcony - perfect with a beer or glass of wine.

Can walk from the door but also get to more popular places like Fuente De. Lagos de Covadonga is a longer drive but stunning. Sunflowers is a good starting point for routes - we did some long walks and wouldn't see any other walkers all day

Potes is a decent base with a few supermarkets (one big one), restaurants, bars etc

Sounds awesome ^

I'm planning an overnighter in the Carneddau later in the year - Walking from Abergwyngregyn to Rowen via Dulyn for those familiar - 12/13 miles. Not sure if it's a stupid idea to do it solo though.. Don't see why not? I'm sensible, will have all the correct gear (and extras) and obviously wouldn't be taking anything close to what would be called "risks". Not like it's a million miles from civilisation and weather at worst will be blowing a hoolie and ****ing it down :p

3rd time up Snowdon on Saturday. Praying for good weather at the top as the last o2 times it's been thick fog with zero visibility :(

I camp out in the Carneddau quite often, some cracking camping spots there, especially around Llyn Dulyn. Just make sure your nav is up to scratch as it can be a bit disorientating up there if the cloud comes down. I was out there last Thursday/Friday, chose a spot near Carnedd Llewelyn expecting it to be quiet. When we got there there, there were four other tents already pitched! I'd forgot the last couple days of the week are the expedition days for the ML qual! I very rarely see anyone else about up there.

This is where we camped.. You can see the other tents by the larger lake. We ended up going over to the other smaller lake and pitching up there.

Off to do Tryfan in October for the 1st time and I have to admit I'm a little daunted. Any tips, routes etc?

Tryfan is one of my favourite scrambles in Wales, just stick to the North Ridge and you'll be fine. Most people that get into trouble manage to get themselves on the east or west face which is a bit more serious mountaineering ground. You can make it a bit more of day by heading up over Glyder Fach and Glyder Fawr and down the Gribin Ridge after. If you're feeling brave you can get upto Glyder Fach via Bristly Ridge, it's still a grade 1 scramble like Tryfan but it's a bit trickier in places.

Just returned from the Great Glen way. Barring the start and finish , it is a pretty good walk.

In other news, what is your favorite boot? My 4 year old's cheepo-tresspass are on the way out. I am down to Meindl Bhutan or Soloman Quest 4D.

depend what fits you well really, boots are very personal things. that said bhutans are fantastic, really supportive without being to heavy or stiff-well worth there cost. when mine wear out i will buy another pair

Certainly true. I want to try them out , but the Blacks store did not have any. Few concerns with Bhutan's

1)How breathable are they? Given they are leather.

2)Are they good for climbing as well? I do not do a lot of scrambling or scree's , but do encounter them from time to time , my worry is they might be too stiff. Can you please let me know mate.

Cheers!

try Cotswold outdoors or go-outdoors plus taunton leisure, they all stock them.
cant really help on the build for your use, as only you know what the conditions are like. but i don't find them stiff, just very supportive. Boots that don't stop your ankle twisting are a waste of money for me its the whole point of boots over shoes!.I walked 10 miles in 26 deg all off road with steep-ish assents and descents with zero issues a few days ago. leather will be less breathable, but also stronger and more supportive, the ideal is both for different conditions/use.

Jesus those Bhutans are heavy.. They weigh more than my B3 mountaineering boots! I'd go for the Solomon purely on weight ~1200g instead of over 1800g. My missus has a pair of the Solomons and they're a decent boot, she uses them for anything from walking the dog in the forest to easy climbs.

they don't feel heavy in use, id have zero issues using mine as daily wear

Only just noticed this thread. I'm a keen walker/hiker with my dogs.

I'm currently on a mission to do as many of the major peaks in the UK this year as my 12 year old Labrador is starting show his age. I've always walked and hiked but nothing major, but so far I have done Snowdon, Yorkshire Three Peaks (in one go and individually) and Blencathra (up Sharp Edge then down Halls Fell). Next stop is 4 night at Glen Nevis camping so we can do Ben Nevis at the end beginning of September.

Here's some pics:

Blencathra - Stunning here, clear day you can see Scotland and Ireland as well as the stunning local area. Many ways to tacke it, we did Sharp Edge up and Halls Fell down and yes, I did the steep scrabmle with all three dogs!

Yes, it's steep but really not that difficult if you take your time. All 3 dogs did it with me.

Snowdon - Stunning place, we did the Pyg Track as it was a mega busy day and very very hot. Far too many people to enjoy it, I would only go during the week and very early if I went again. I really want to do Crib Goch next and would like to take it in so the quieter the better.

Always under dressed and carrying too much!

Yourkshire Three Peaks - Only one photo. Weather wasn't the best, spent most of the day in the clouds. The scambles were wet and slippy and I thought jeans wasa good idea for half of it. We did it in about 10 hours with the dogs. Last 2 miles was awful never walked that distance before, but we were encouraged by a nice Rainbow framing Pen-Y-Ghent for the last leg.

This is why I want a dog :) Ace pic!

You scrambled up pic #3 with the dogs?! Last time I went up Snowdon we went up Pyg Track and that looked sketchy enough for dogs (although it was still snowy).

Hoping to do Crib Goch at some point soon. Gf wont do it so need to call on a mate or my dad instead

@Burnsey, or anyone else in the know... I have the OS Map app on my phone with a few maps downloaded to it that I've purchased, so I can use the OS Explorer maps on my phone no problemo.

Why is it that even though I have purchased those maps and redeemed them on my account, I can't view the Explorer layer on ordnancesurvey.co.uk without a premium subscription? Seems unfair to have to pay twice to use it on PC!

just the way it is, unfortunately.

has anyone done any long distance trails and found any good extremely high density food to carry.

peanut butter is perfect, but cant just eat that all day, about 6calories per gram, so still looking at 500g per day.
anyone know anything else which is 6calories per g or higher. still tasty and packs some vits and minerals in, like trail bars or anything. looked at pemican but most of the available stuff is 4calories per gram, same as the meal replacement powders.

food account for far far far to much weight when i do west highland ways, and some things i'm considering have no resupply sections for best part of a week.

It's common for people to send supplies ahead to pickup en route.

Not sure how long you expect to take as it's only ~100miles but you will be passing through places with shops too.
