Hitachi 1TB drives showing up in retail...

depends, are you going to raid the 500GB's and how important is the stuff you want to keep.

Personally I'm going to be buying the 1TB drives for my server (the raid card should support them) but thats in a raid so if one fails I can rebuild it

With the 2 disk approach you would only loose 500GB of data if a single disk fails (2 can fail but less likely in the same period), if you go 1 disk you loose the lot.

Definatly some Pros and cons to having 2x500giggers rather then 1TB.

2 X 500 giggers are cheaper around 80 quid mark so thats £160 vs £200, and if your 1TB drive dies your in trouble, with 2 500 giggers one could reload o/s back on the other drive.

Course with 1TB u have less heat/noise over 2 drives... which to be is more risky but better ;)

Wow, 1TB drives at a decent price, its a buyers market to be sure, the sellers must be feeling the pinch.

I built a 1TB system just 6 months ago for a client using 4x 250GB Hitachi's @ £55 (£220 total).

Some quick questions:

How backwards compatible are these drives? i.e will they work on nForce-4? nForce-2 etc?

How long would it take to format one of these??? :D

They'll run on just about any SATA capable board, I don't recall any SATA boards that don't support 48bit LBA for large drive support. In normal Hitachi tradition I assume they'll ship in SATA1 mode and will need set to SATA2 mode using the Drive Feature Tool software. Do this before creating any RAID arrays as the DFT won't recognise a disk in an array

Formatting? Do a quick format, a full one will be at least an overnight job.

Most of my Hitachi drives did but te last batch of 320Gb drives I got came as SATA2 standard.

oooooh, i'm sooo tempted to get one as my backup as I can I partition it into 2x 500gb ones :p .
Currently I have 3 250gb WD's, 2 in a RAID0 config as my main harddrive, the last one is only used as storage for all my files but I'm running out of space :p
Currently i'm burning all my music and movies to cd/dvd to free up space but if I got a 1tb drive for storage I could have backups of my stuff on dvd's aswell as having it on my pc.
I really like my setup at the moment though, just having my programs on a RAID0 config means that I experience the dreaded death of my drive I just need to reinstall all my programs :D

am thinking of selling my 3 x 160GB HDs and keep the 200GB for OS and the 1TB for everything else.

But ill wait untill the Seagate drives comes, get a nice little discount from my mates who works for them :) :p
