HMRC tax fraud or error?

The main number, 0300 200 3300.

I don't know why you aren't calling the number that line will eventually direct you to.

Which is one that the tax involves.

Your essentially wasting your own time by phoning the general line.

Anyway after being on hold for 2 hours then being directed to the correct line to be put on hold for another 2 hours you might learn.

I tried that one too.

Yeah well it's Monday to Friday across most lines.

I'll give you a tip. The line opens at 8am. The best time to call is a actually 7:50am. The call centre staff are allowed to start work 15 minutes early. A lot don't but some do because nobody phones early so it's an easy 15 minutes of paid work.

You should get straight through.

Thanks. What documentation should I have to hand to best help them sort this out?

You will need your tax reference number.

If you tell me what tax it's for it would help. Like your vat registration number. SA reference.

You also need to be able to pass the security questions before they will discuss your account.

If they cannot see this repayment they will then pass the info onto the fraud team or possibly transfer you to them.

Security questions will depend on the tax. Could be what was your recent return figure. Bank account details that they hold on file.

I can't remember but make sure that you have what it takes to pass security. If you fail that you have to hang up and call again. Which could be a massive waste of your time.

So make sure you have your records to hand.

It just says 'Thank you for your recent claim to repayment'. I don't feel comfortable giving out the reference number since it is my UTR, but it has a 'K01' suffix.

Not asking for your reference number just what tax it relates to.

If it's UTR I'm guessing it's for self assessment. So you need to call the SA helpline.

I cannot recall their security questions. Possibly national insurance, address, bank account. But it's been a long time since I've had to call them. They may even ask for figures off your last self assessment return or the year before. Or your current balance.
